If i go Moser they have powder coating availble for an extra $270 for the unit and cover. IS it worth the extra for that or is it just as good to paint it myself? Alos would 30 Spline be ok for 500-600 crank HP or would you go up to 33 or 35?

No, its not worth $270 for powder coating TO ME, but to each his own. I'm down with the Rustoleum as well.

For 500-600 crank the stock 8.5 is more than enough with 28 splines let alone a set of 30 spline Moser Axles..

Has anyone bought the 12 bolt G Body rear with disk brakes from Justrearends.com? I just spoke to Jim there and he is saying that there is issues with clearances on these units. Has anyone had any issues with putting disk brakes in the rear of a 83-88 Monte SS?
i got a good deal on a quick performance 9 inch g-body kit and will be installing it this summer in my 81 malibu. it came with 35 spline axles which i will not be using. i will use the 31 spline ones. 35 splines are total over kill for what i have so i'll put them in the spare parts department in the garage. may use them for trade bait.

The center section is where the 9" gets expensive. In the end its like this:
integral rears typically the housing costs more
9" the center section gets expensive (unless you cheese out and use the weak garden variety stock iron housings and 28 spline carriers). It when you get into Nodular or aluminum housings with Detroit Locker or similar carriers that the prices go crazy.

i agree. i have seen new center sections for 700 shipped. you have to decide what hp is going into your build and how clever you are when you are dealing. i have read on this forum where some of these members have gone the 28 spline route and have put tremendous amounts hp to them without failure. every rear will break sooner or later with the right amount of power. i have seen dana's brake in bracket racing small blocks after many years of service. i am just starting to go the 9 inch route. i bought a quick performance housing and axle with studs and bolts for 500 shipped. all new never used from a guy in texas. the axles were 35 spline which puts everything much more expensive. i'm doing some dealing for 31 spline and will go for the center section then. i'll try to keep everyone posted for the final cost. btw 81 malibu. i'm counting on having about 1500 after the smoke clears.but everybody knows how that goes, one little mistake can cost hundreds so i have to be careful.

When I did my 9" many years ago I bought a Moser housing and axle kit direct and then ordered my nodular housing ,Detroit Locker, gears etc separately for the best price and brought my center section to DTS to have them set it up since they are only about 8 miles from me.
I did it this way to eliminate any possibility for up pricing the parts.
