guys, disassembling frame on my 78 Monte. It has a beefy front sway bar. Other than new aftermarket ones being lighter, no performance difference, correct? I'd like to save a few bucks where I can. Frame and all components getting sandblasted and powder coated. Thanks for opinions.

Aftermarket sway bars typically are larger diameter than the largest stock gbody bar (F41) but can be hollow or solid.
I personally think most aftermarket bars are better made with better materials than the production bars and do make a difference compared to stock. If you are set on using your bars upgrade the frame mounts and end links to urethane to help stiffen it up more.

metal fatigue is unpredictable obviously just like oxidation but in my experience the stock ones are better if you could buy 1 from a dry climate such as the Southwest, but anything Midwest that's used can't be trusted so you might as well get the aftermarket in that case. Yeah, the aftermarket ones are obviously better at first b/c they're new, let's see how they held up in 20 years from now compared to the solid stock ones though, lol

If you are trying to save a few bucks then why not keep the sway bar using new bushings and mounts . It's easy enough to change the bar in the future if want an aftermarket sway bar.

If you're looking to tighten up the car as 565bbchevy mentioned I would do it. If you want to keep the stock type ride or save cash in the meantime sand it clean it paint it and throw some new bushings and you'll be all set.

Like pontiacgp said it is easy to replace upgrade that later. Plus you can score a killer deal used on those parts.

Thanks guys, trying to save where I can. Car was in pretty good shape so I think I'll re- use it for now... Give me your thoughts on this set-up:

1. Sandblast and powdercoat frame, these types of parts
2. PST front end kit with adjustable coil overs(don't want to deal with spring changes for height adjustment)
3. Energy suspension bushings
4. UMI or Hotchkis rear control arms, shock mounted brace, control arm braces
5. Notching rear frame to accept BFG 275's, on my 15x8 vette rally's
6. JT race craft LCA weld in support?(450hp motor going in)

Feedback? I'll be taking pictures along the way to either do a build thread or just post along way.

Thanks, having your feedback is everything

I would sand blast the frame which was what I did with mine but I brush painted it with Sem rust shield with great results and saved a ton of money vs. Powder coating which would free up money for sway bars hint hint! Lol.

I mean your getting coil overs and other good suspension parts and if you're doing this over time with no big rush I would do everything new.

there goes your saving a few bucks....

Hotchkis is really good but kind of overpriced. I once scored a decent HD sway bar from an Olds in the junkyard, I think it was a Delta 88 or a Holiday Coupe. Had to put it in backwards but it really firmed things up. $15. that was one of the best used parts I have ever used on a G so far

for used parts I used the F body rear sway bar from a GTA. Heated up the ends and bent them in an inch or so. Used the F body hardware and used an existing hole in the cross member to bolt it to the frame with the F body hardware. I don't like the G body rear sway bar being attached to the lower control arms
