The friend of mine who bought that 95 Trans Am which is actually a 96 Trans Am had the rear end looked at cause it was whining. The guys who were working on it said it needed a shim kit which I thought strange cause a backlash that is out of tolerance would not cause the rear end to whine. I didn't know what rear end these Trans Am's run so I looked it up and I was shocked to learn that GM put a 5.7 engine with a T56 transmission and a 7.5 rear end in these cars....:wtf:

That's the same car he fell in love with at first sight of an online picture. That car has been driven real hard and he's starting to pay for it since he doesn't do any work on his own.
The 28 spline axle helps but the two pinion gears don't have much meat in the posi. I broke mine poping the clutch at low rpm just to do a chirp to show off. I still remember my friends having a good laugh over that. I didn't think GM would use that rear especially in a standard.

Update on the Trams Am, for the rear end the crown and pinion had to be changed and both axles after merely 80,000 miles. The shop even went to the trouble of using the old studs in the new axles. The engine has a healthy oil leak but it shouldn't be leaking too long cause the engine is done and pumping out blue smoke at all times. On a good note he put the convertible top down for the first time ( and for those who are wondering, no he did not try the top before buying the car) and it sorta of works but won't for long cause the hydraulic lines at motor for the roof are leaking a little. My friend isn't too happy with his car any longer.

I hate F Bodies. IMO they are half-*ss G-Bodies. I find it comical that they are generally viewed as more 'sporty' than G Bodies. As far as quality goes, so many corners were cut on them. Fisher did a lousy job on the bodies. I don't know what the appeal is in them other than maybe the T-Tops. And personally, I think the 3rd and 4th gens are girl cars.

I'll let him know....

I cut 1.75 60fts on a stock 170k mile posi 3.42 in my supercharged v6 car. Still holding up.

But yeah, they are not great fit and finish cars. They are great semi sporty beaters though. New enough that you can find v6 ones for 1000 that need minor work. No way you can do that with a G body. I don't feel bad if I get into a light crash, and if I stuff it into a snow bank in the winter I can get parts actually.
