Just started my engine after it sat for 18 months and it had a lifter noise only ran it for 30 seconds and it went away. Started it this morning and it did the same thing but went away. Should I be worried or wait until I put some miles on it.

Figured it was normal but how long should it take before it goes away? It never did it before I parked it.

Here's what's on the board at Sallee Chevrolet on a thread about the ZZ4 valve train noise at start up..

If you only get a tick at idle ignore this post..

If our ticking goes away when warmed up, ignore this post.

If you have what you swear is just ONE lifter that makes a annoying tick from 1400-2000 RPM and it does it worse when under a load...READ THIS.

I'm aware hyd lifters can bleed down if sitting for a while. I wonder if this can be helped by priming the oil pump before starting it? Is it possible to prime it, come back after a while, prime it again for extra pressure, then start?

if you want to do that all you need is a kill switch on the power wire to the distributor and flip it on when the pressure has built up

The lifter noise went away on its own. I got into the habit of cranking untill there is oil pressure before I pump the pedal. Thanks to everyone for your input!

Glad it got solved. Those ZZ4 engines are nicely put together and a ticking valve can ruin the sound of that engine. I installed the ZZ4 valve springs on my vortec heads today and I was surprised how much lighter the titanium valve caps were compared to the GM steel ones
