Hello all, well I just got a new used 1985 Caballero Amarillo edition. I already had some new upgrades on it but I'm having a problem with the lights. First, when turning on the car the driving lights come on automatically (not sure if they should). Second, when you turn the headlights on only one of the outer lights comes on. Thirdly, when you put the high beams on nothing happens with the first light, but the second light (that normally doesn't work) comes on in high beam only. Fourth, the 2 lights that are closer to the radiator do not come on at all. If that makes sense... Can anyone give me some advice on this issue?
Thanks.

I would start with the grounds in the harness under the hood. Another place to look would be the dimmer switch on the steering column. I have chased down issues on my regal like that.

crimped wire or something. Lights shouldn't come on w/ the ignition. You might have to take the steering wheel off if it's hardwired together by a previous owner... that sucks. The steering wheel removal tool can be 'borrowed' at stores like Advance / AZ

Thanks guys, I'll look at it tomorrow.

So, the inner 2 lights (closest to the radiator) are they only high beams? So does the car have 4 high beam lights then? Does anyone have a picture of the dimmer on the steering column? One last thing, is there a fuse for the high beams? I might have to have my mechanic chase down all these electrical problems. Also, the gauge cluster is in bad shape. The gauges "kinda" work but really half *ss. No odometer or trip. Gas gauge is flaky, as well as speedo...Thanks for any further help...EH

I just my car to bed for the winter after a good hand wash or i would get a pick of dimmer switch for you. Best way to describe it, from memory, is to drop the steering column bolts and move it down. It is on top of the column with a rod going in the top of it, dimmer rod, and a harness on the side, again by memory. Also the two inside lights are the high beams. I hope this helps some. It definitely sounds like a ground issue in the dash cluster. I dont believe their is a separate fuse for high beems but not sure

there is no fuse for the head lights, the light switch has a thermal relay that protects the system. If you don't have a circuit tester then buy one, they are cheap, easy to use and can help to solve electrical problems

Well, I have an update to my lighting problems. I replaced the bad hi/low light and now both of the farthest apart lights work on hi/low beams. Unfortunately, I'm still not sure what is wrong with the inner (or high only beams). One problem down... A few more to go.
