Test grounds with a light and check all cable connections. Clean off any corrosion and tighten correctly. Make sure 120 volts is going into the starter solenoid. Also fusible links are cheap .... wouldn't hurt to just go ahead and replace. I can post up a diagram of the fusebox out of the 81's factory electrical manual but I can not guarantee no changes between the years.

i know these stock engine bays are a cluttered mess but you really have to start by following the power wire from the positive on the battery to the starter as well as the ground to the block and fender/core support. and then follow the wire from the starter to the firewall and go from there. chances are you might find burnt through insolation or a split, something of that nature

grab a test light or a multi meter check every importatnt wire and take it slow dont loose ur patience in the beginning of this year i hit a rough patch i lost every complete interest i had in the car and to top it off i had no money i put the forsale sign on the car and had a sad face lol i got like 10 offers but no one bought it luckly it took one new mod to install on the car and i fell in love again and saw the potential the car had

i had the same problem, was going down the freeway and boom lost all power. i can bet money its ur fusible link which also means u got a major short some where. check for melted wires in the engine bay

I had the EXACT same problem, in fact if i looked on here i bet i could find my original post. Everyone on here tried to help me, but the problem was ****ing hidden. Do what pretty much everyone said, but FIRST check the wires to your starter, with a meeter. Just because they "look" alright doesn't mean sh*t.

I replaced, Ignition switch on column, starter, REWIRED EVERYTHING, and dropped a new Dist, AND replaced ALL OF THE FUSES AND THE BOX. Guess what the problem was?

The main lead wire leading to my starter, was busted INSIDE THE SHIELDING! From the outside the wire looked Fine.

Seriously, check the wires with a meeter to make SURE you're actually getting current. Don't learn this lesson the way i did.

these fuselinks u talk about are they just a wire with a lil prong on them..if so i brought a sh*t load of 12 gauge wire and prongs but its alot of wires just under here and i dont kno what they are for...

u should buy yourself a shop manual for your cutlass to help you out with your wiring i bought one off ebay for 30 dollars and that book is helpful when it comes to wiring diagrams there detailed and color coded diagrams very helfpful... did u return that starter to autozone
