I just jumped into my '78 grand Prix project and I plan to lower the car using 2" drop spindles, rear springs, etc. I had an '85 SS back in the day with the same set-up and loved it.....except I kept the 15" wheels on it.

This time around I'd like to run 18's and possibly 20's in back. I want everything to tuck but I'm worried about fitment. Does anyone have pics of bigger wheels on a lowered car? Will the 20's tuck in the rear without rubbing or will I be better off going 18's all the way around? I'm not 100% sold on 20's in the rear either. I still think they look a little big for these cars but I want to do something different. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.
 
The only G-body that I have lowered was an '81 Cutlass and I was running 14x8 wheels before I lowered it but after that I had A-arm rub issues on the front. which would have been resolved by a bigger wheel diameter (which was very expensive then). I had no issues at all with the 245-60R14's (iirc) on the rears and I had a big 2" receiver hitch on the back and towed my 20' boat. So, depending on your overall wheel diameter, if you use the above wheels as a guide, that should give you some idea of what will positively work on there since you likely won't have the weight of a receiver hitch on the back (unless you put subs in your trunk).

When you lower it, that is the perfect time to put poly bushings all the way around while you are in there.
 
I quit using rubber bushings a loooong time ago! Not a big stereo guy either. I would like to see something lowered with 18's though. That's what I'll most likely go with since the wheel I want isn't made in a 17.
 
This is the only pic I have handy of the one above I talked about. That car had 2" drop spindles up front and 1.5" lowering springs in the rear.

A 235/40R18 would be almost identical diameter to a 245/60R14. So it should fit the wheel well about the same but with additional A-arm and brake clearance.

That's a nice stance. Do you mind if I ask what suspension you're using or amount of drop? Any rub front or back? What width are your wheels? I apologize for asking a million questions but I like doing things right the first time when I can help it. Thanks.
 
If you have any power & gearing at all 20s spin like crazy. Front wheel drive economy cars can leave you at a light. You can get drag radials in 18s though. Anything more than 1.5" drop also gets to be a pia. Also 18s still look right with the body lines. Much bigger starts to look like a match box car.

I'd prefer 17's in this wheel but the smallest they make is an 18. Given the condition of Chicago streets, I'm not a fan of rubber band tires.
