That show would be pretty hard to get to without a car, even though it is less than 15 miles from Tokyo Narita Airport. All my friends that worked around Narita had cars and loved their cars. In Tokyo proper, maybe 10% of the people have/love cars. Only 45 miles away and the attitude about cars shifts from "New York City 2017" to "Rural America, 1968"
I used to go to Daiba a lot. I may happen to plan a trip when they have a swap meet in Daiba. That is much easier to get to and it would be neat to see what people buy/sell.
That is surprising as Japan has much tougher inspections that they actually enforce than the US does. They make CA look like FL. Basically cars there are inspected every 2 years and everything must be working with no defects. Just bad paint will get a car failed and illegal to drive. Most cars on this site would be considered unsafe and not road worthy by the Japan government. The older the car gets or bigger the engine, the higher the inspection fees get. Plus their culture really looks down on "dirty" jobs like car repair as being shameful.
45 miles outside Tokyo things are a little different. There are still people living like is 1917, not 2017.
Its not like some Tokyo guy is going to go to move to rural Japan and "crack heads". It takes 10's of thousands of "blue collar" guys to keep the airports open and the trains running. Without them, the country shuts down in about 15 minutes.
The Japanese government lets the hicks have a little freedom USA style. Just keep the airport open and the trains running and keep your **** out of Tokyo.
