LS Disappointment?

I dunno. Back in 2016, post Drag Week, I put my 5300lb Procharged TBSS into the 11s at 116mph. How much power does it take to go 116mph at 5300lbs? About 650-700hp. Let that sink in for a moment. Because in a car 2000lbs lighter it would run high 9s.

Stock high mileage long block with an LS9 cam and some fresh beehives, headers (the Holley Mid-Rise intake is a wash for power potential compared to the stock intake), and an intercooled D1SC Procharger. That's it. All pushed through an AWD system and a 9.5" differential... and the car seats still installed.

It is still listed as the 7th quickest/fastest SBE AWD truck in North America: https://tbssowners.com/forums/track-racing/97840-**official-1-4-mile-fast-list**.html

And this is my daily driver/Winter beater.

It is all in the correct selection of parts and the tuning. If they suck, the engine sucks and the car will not perform. It took me a week and thousands of miles to tune the truck in. It took two summers to get the wagon sorted. And sure as sh*t the Monte isn't going to be tuned right straight out of the box.

So who knows what is wrong with Lou's combo?

Don't mind me I am just a huge LS nutswinger.

it's the Canadian gas!!!

Max, ever hear of ecoboost?

Not every turbo build is all about maximum acceleration, it gets used a lot for late model small displacement commuters to achieve better fuel economy
Except they are under investigation because they like about their fuel economy on the ecopoops, oops I meant Ecoboost. 😉

Furthermore more I saw that episode and there must've been something really wrong or an extremely bad choice of parts on that Camaro. That should've been an easy 600rwhp, if not MUCH more.

I think in the end of that episode the not Lou guy said he was disappointed but it was just the first tune they did on it.

Or something along those lines

Plus the police Taurus ecoboosts have had several recalls for random stalling.

Mike, you're my outlier in this thread (and bob64 is it?). Taking the time to do the research and learn how to tune set you guys apart from the crowd. I'm sure there are others, but you two are first to mind....
There's guys like my buddy with the ZR1 that rely on others for the tuning, and it costs big bucks if you can't to it yourself.
My point was more about combination and how easily you can screw the pooch and end up with a fancy, polished turd. FFS, there are plenty of proven combos out there, why do what you "think" will be good? Go to the track, and talk to someone running impressive numbers.

What what? How did my name get dragged into this? I haven't built a turbocharged engine yet. But l'm thinking about it for the 502BBC which the car won't be ready for atleast another year so l got alot more looking into it, but l'm watching twin procharger advancement at the moment. So not sure turbos are in my future. If it's not a BBC l just can't be bothered throwing money an time at it. Just my opinion.

So as for my little LS's in dailies, there pretty nice right where they are at 345hp an all wheel drive.

In learning about turbo for myself an loving BBC's there is just to much heat under a hood which means you got to throw big intercooler and water coolers at it. So where do you jam it all in and together. Sure it can be done but not digging it. SBC allows you the room but you need a dyno in your shop to tune. You got to figure out what you want in turbos, quicker or slower spooling up allowing you either quicker off the line or top end power.

I build every engine on a computer, switching parts and thinking over the cost to get the maximum hp/tq per dollar. Then l sit an think about what that car l want it to do. I'm a addicted to speed, so then you got to gear it right. On the Computer my Camaro at 6000rpm is said to be able to do 306kph or roughly 188mph, will it? Not sure only hit 251kph, it had more but co-pilot started screaming like a little girl.

I guess my point is you can't just throw anything at a engine and expect it squeeze every hp/tq out of it. Know the theory behind every part. Always question the results an you don't have to be a follower. Honestly the biggest reason l haven't went turbos on a LS engine beforehand is because everyone and there dog is doing it!

End of my blah blah an blah!!

I just think the compromises that must be made to twin blow an engine are made specifically to make power, not a street-able engine that gets mileage and behaves on the street.

That's actually the main advantage of an LS turbo build.....you can make big power while getting good mileage and maintaining streetability.

There are many examples of 500-900 whp turbo ls cars getting 20 mpg, using a mild cam with a near stock idle, 3.XX rear gears, 4l80e, quick spooling turbos with billet compressor wheel/ball bearing/matched T/C etc..... Doesn't get much more streetable than that. Try accomplishing the same thing with an N/A BBC.

My point about ecoboost was that turbos, even multiples, are being used for things other than all-out performance.

Guy at work has a Cruze (isn't that a missle?) with a turbo 1.4.

You may not get the mileage but there is nothing better than a NA BBC rumble. You can get pretty big #'s out of a BBC and its more reliable.

I still lament selling my L89 396 (402) to buy my Turbo Buick.

Agreed that the rumble of a healthy BBC is tough to beat (that and the physical presence of it in the engine bay)

Disagree on reliability. LS gets the nod in my book.
