Have a high-mileage 08 Silverado crew cab with 5.3 and 4L60e transmission. think my transmission is starting to slip and needs a rebuild. came across a new GM 6L60e with torque converter for sale that says it fits 99-2013 Silverado. looking at the list there seem to be various years of implementation depending on the model (regular cab, 6.0L, etc).

does anyone know if:
-you can replace a 4l60e with a 6L60e straight up? what is involved? can you just re-program the computer, or do you have to get one from the junkyard?

or is this really just too much of a PITA to deal with?

So I have never done this particular swap, but gave a semi educated guess as what would be involved. Wiring harness swap or modifications, sector swap the program in the pcm for the transmission. I really have no idea how much would actually be involved with either one of those though. Good luck!

I think they did the opposite on Powernation, a 6L80E to a 4L80E. Good call on not wanting to rebuild the 4L60E, a 4L80E is also another choice to replace that POS.

Probably could be done, but why?

Something neat/different? Sure, if you’re into that then I’m sure someone can get it done, including you, if the skill set is present.

Reliability? 4L80 for the win.

as mentioned, high mileage and transmission seems to be slipping. if 6L60e will work then....

-don't have to rebuild mine, just swap
-6L60e comes with TC for $1k
-6L60e is a factory reman, not some garage mechanic

you need the software to accompany the 6L60E transmission which most call it doing a segment swap i have tried to do it many times with the free software everyone uses and failed along side with others only way it can be done correctly is to do a segment swap. so i decided not to do it and go with a TH400 for now till i finish my build with the 4l80E. hope this helps I'm doing this now i have a bin file that could help you if you have a stock 5.3 on corn and wanting a 4L80E behind it .

If this is for a high mileage stock truck. What about rebuilding your original transmission.
4L80E's get a good reputation from being behind powerful builds but they are huge, not as effiecient and 2 less gears that a 6L60E.

I'm all up for swaps but that's not in in and out for a stock truck.

Do you mean 6L80e

I think the fact that the TCM is INSIDE the transmission is lost on some of you. ECM gets a flash and he's on his way. Just bolt it in, then you're committed to the rest of the swap. You picked a very easy platform to make this happen.
