Most of us here I think have seen the 1979 dystopic Australian movie made by Kennedy-Miller Productions by the name of Mad Max ( Or The Road Warrior in the US). Most of us also have long wanted to have the cool shifter with the pull handle for the 6-71 blower on it. Now, on the movie car it was a fake and the blower was gutted. However, would it be possible to make something functionally similar using a centrifugal supercharger like a Paxton? I know Toyota did it with the supercharged MR2, but how they clutched the blower I have no idea. So, I was thinking, why not just use a bypass valve that stays open most of the time, and takes away some of the parasitic drag used to pressurize the intake when it is not needed? Then, you could just pull a switch to close it when you needed the extra power, maybe by using something like an electric exhaust dump valve? Could you even make a blower clutch using some sort of dog-clutch arrangement that would decouple when the valve was open, but couple when it was closed? Now, as cool as it would be to do this, I am not actually thinking of doing it in the near future. (My finances barely permit me to buy gas half the time.) I post it really as a question of theory to give us something entertaining to discuss.

Mad Max was indeed a 1979 release.
Mad Max 2 (1981) was also known as The Road Warrior.
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome was a 1985 release.
In the 1983 Chuck Norris movie Lone Wolf McQuade, his Dodge had a clutched supercharger.
Of course,Mr Norris and said Dodge were completely buried underground when we found this fact out.

*damn,andrewmp6 got the Norris bit just before me.....

they already make it. a customer at my last job had a mustand with it in there. it was basically a "wastegated" S-charger.

If you used a clutch like a ac compressor it could be done but i live by k.i.s.s..Another movie most forget http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQkyi1_l6po

Well, the problem I have with using an A/C compressor clutch is slippage. It really can't hold that much pressure, and superchargers produce a much heavier strain than A/C compressors.

Some factory superchargers already use a clutch like an A/C compressor. The one that comes to mind immediately is the supercharged 1.6 liter used in the first gen Toyota MR2.

Read the post next time joe.

actually centrifugal chargers don't have that much resistance and usually runa regular s-belt. at least until you get to the big, high boost race ones. 8)

I wonder how much boost I would need to top 500hp in a mild 355? The reason is, 500hp has become the new 300hp in newer cars since so many of the better ones make at least 400. I just want to figure out how to do it in a way that does not affect fuel economy when it is not needed. EFI is a given, maybe with a dual map ECU. One for when the blower is bypassed, one for when it is in use.

the first question is whatis your compression ratio? if it's 8-8.5:1 you can run quite a bit of boost. if it's 9.5 you're limited to about 8psi IIRC (i have 9.7:1 and was looking at S/C's myself) it's pretty easy to run with EFI, you just need a 2 bar MAP sensor and/or a MAF sensor. this way the ECU knows exactly how much air the engine is getting and fuels accordingly. you just have to program the ECM right. i'd also run the "wastegate" or clutch through the ECM.
