I
My Olds wasn't cheap because I tried building it a few times before I figured out that I couldn't build engines. I had to farm it out to get what I wanted. There's probably $10k in the engine with room to grow (better heads, cam, and induction), but I ran out of money. However, when I pop the hood, I know there's a very slim chance of seeing anything like it in the same parking lot. THAT, is why I keep my Olds "Rocket Powered".

Swap "Olds" for "Buick" and you basically just summed up my Regal.

There are tons of LS swaps around here. I guess I'm too close to "the city".

They are everywhere here, too. Go to any car cruise night and there are dozens upon dozens of them.

This is what we are up against. This was today when I went to open my restaurant.
5 Suv's all different brands but almost identical. Look at the old Chevy peeking up at the very end. That is my 96 Yukon. Oldest most unique vehicle in the row.

Southwest Idaho doesn't have that many LS swapped cars. You always hear about some tool that knows this dudes sister's second cousin's ex boyfriend that has half a dozen of them but they don't exist in large numbers. I'm willing to bet that fewer than a dozen boosted examples are around here. Even fewer of them actually get driven. Most people think it's ultra easy to swap them into everything. Most manage to get the engine, possibly set it in the vehicle and run out of talent/motivation/money

Are we looking at the same images? Those cars look built to me, and on a hacker's budget too. Like someone just had fun doing it, using what they had at hand to do something with, not caring what others think. The true roots of hot rodding. I think those images make the point very well.

You mean they aren't built 'cause they don't have a snazzy paint job like yours?

Yeah, you are missing something because there are a lot of serious high-dollar builds in those pictures.

I am not sure where you think the connection between my car and extravagance lies... or how it applies to this conversation?

I do see a lot of LS swaps, but not many turbo LSs. And even the ones I have seen are not low budget or even DIY type builds. Most are bought not built. And there are definitely plenty of the ones than ran out of talent/motivation/money and also patience. A lot of younger guys start the swap and want it done and running by the end of the week. Then they realize it'll take a lot longer than that, sell it in pieces and go buy something that is already done. My Regal has been in project state since I've owned it, and it's been 8 years. My interest in it has dipped and peaked multiple times, but I've always come back to it.

Is ProGrunge a thing?....cause that's what I got from the first half-dozen pics

Didn't read the article...mostly because HR lost me a couple decades ago when they turned into the "buy this sponsor's "budget" part and have your favorite shop bolt it in" magazine

I really miss Doug Marion and Super Chevy of the 80s...you know, an average guy that lived in the real world. 25 mpg with a carb and without overdrive in a 70 Monte Carlo....in 1982

They lost me 10 years ago when they featured the 100th checkbook build in a row that said something like " and the seats are wildebeest hide with ostrich inserts and eelskin lettering"
And no I am not making it up. I am paraphrasing but it is close.

I am one of those want to do an LS swap guys, even bought the intake and msd but have since decided to get my head out of my *ss and quit reading about every second guy making 500hp with an ls swap. Going back a bit but still forward for my 81 olds with a vortec build that is truly budget and done entirely by me.

I think the whole ratrod and now rat-wrap thing is getting out of hand. Patina is nice and all - but some of it just feels too forced. Then again most of us just do this for the attention.

wh*res!

I really like the painted fake patina- NOT. It's really bad when it's just plain obvious.

I like the stuff Darnell does at Vegas Rat Rods but think even he tries a little hard at it times too
