I have a 1980 Malibu that's eventually going to get a complete dash replacement, because its got the single speaker dash, and because the dash that's in the car now is cracked in a couple of areas. I'm going to go with the newer style (1981 & up) dash in the car, to address both problems.
I want to upgrade the radio in the car, in the process of doing the dash swap. I've always liked the factory style GM Delco radios. Maybe its because I'm used to them, or maybe because I find them simpler to use, but I'd like to go with a newer style GM Delco radio for the upgrade. Yes, I know that there are literally almost endless different styles of aftermarket radios/CD/MP3/whatever type units out there, but right now, I'm trying to go with a Delco unit, for a more "factory" type look in the car.
From 1986-1988 in the Monte Carlos, and in 1986/87 in the El Caminos, GM used the later style, larger face double DIN (1.5 DIN?) radios and tape players in the same dash panel, so I found the style of HVAC/radio bezel from that setup, to help facilitate this conversion. Then, I picked up a newer style GM Delco AM/FM/CD/cassette deck at a swap meet, thinking that it would work for me. Well, that's where my plan kind of fell off the rails. This newer style radio is much physically larger than I thought, and it won't fit either the bezel, or the dash that I want to use in the car.
My situation is this-has anyone here ever tried to do anything similar to this? Is there a way to make this radio work without major surgery? Should I try to find a different radio/deck that will fit, and if so, does anyone know of a newer style GM Delco radio/deck that will play CDs, that will fit the dash and the bezel? Am I missing something?
I'm going to post some photos of the parts that I have, to show what I'm talking about. As always, any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Yes, you're missing something. There were the original 1-din/2-post units up until '82 or '83 or something. Then they switched to 1.5 DIN. The dash, or at least the cover plates changed to accomodate it. There were no full-on double-din radios in a g-body, and they won't fit without cutting things up horribly. Look for 1.5 DIN stuff out of like a later 1980's early 90's Camaro or Firebird or S10/Blazer with CD, I think will fit. If memory serves they used the 1.5 din form factor up into the early 2000's.

Something along these lines: http://www.ebay.com/itm/GM-CD-RADIO...AMINO-OLDS-CUTLASS-CAMARO-DELCO-/172310292195 I believe Chrysler used this configuration during the same time.

If you want to get really adventurous get the din and a half tape deck and stand alone CD player from a full size truck, mid 90's. Other wise as posted, the din and a half is your bet bet at fitting.
