Max's Malibu

OK boys and girls. After several busy days at work, I finally found some time to work on G.

I had a couple of outside lights not working so I replaced all of the outside bulbs except the headlights. Signal blinkers still don't work right so I get into the dash. Its not hard on this car because when they yanked the a/c they took it all, air ducts and everything. No problem. Makes it real easy to get waaaay up in the dash. So now I notice that I also have problems with the dash lights too. Then, I go to start the car to recharge the battery and it wont even turn over. Got headlights and power to everything except the starter. Now, I'm thinking that I have been away from the game too long and have lost my touch.

On the off chance that the battery is just a little to low on charge, I put it on my charger and go aggravate my wife for half an hour. When she finally starts getting mad, I go back out and the car starts. I figure, problem solved. I'm not big on electrical so when it gets too dark to work and the car still isn't right, I'm not surprised. I figure I can get pissed and confused all over again tomorrow.

So its tomorrow now and sure enough, I'm pissed and confused, but I am making progress. If I reach into the dash and grab the wiring harness and move it just right, the lights work right. So I try to start the car to charge the battery up again and guess what, Oh sh*t, don't bother, you already know. G won't even turn over. Put it on the charger for half an hour and wait. (mamas at work, can't aggravate her) Still won't start. Now I'm cussin the guy who sold me this G-body POS. I know he heard me!! Anyway, I'm looking for stuff to start a fire with and all of a sudden, it occurs to me, maybe the starter and the lights are two completely different problems. I had to find some asperin it gave me such a headache.

So I jack the car up high enough to wedge my big *ss under it. (Way, way, way up high) I get underneath the car and drop the starter. Take it to AutoZone and it tests DOA (dead on arrival). I buy another starter and am rewarded with a HUGE bruise on my shoulder putting the starter back in.

So I take a shower, put clean crappy clothes on and get in the car. I promise never to be mean or curse again and turn the key. G starts right up and all is well at my house. Now I have to fix the lights. I stick my head as far under the dash as my gut will allow, grab the wiring harness and move it to the just so position, where all the lights come on like they should. I am just about to give up and slide out from under the dash when I notice that some COMPLETE ****ING ******* has disconnected the dash ground and left it tangled in the wiring harness. I loosen a grounded dash bolt reconnect the ground wire and Presto Zoomo!! all the lights work just like they should except one bulb behind the speedo. Probably a bad twist socket. No biggy. Im going to aftermarket guages and a homemade dash. What I have works for now.

It wasn't till I got in bed that night that I realized that I had only started the car three or four times since I got home. I'm lucky the starter didn't quit on my way home from North Carolina.

Anyway, pretty much everything in or on the car is working perfectly now. I took G to a place and got an inspection sticker. I had a few minutes today and took some pics of the interior. If you look close you can see that the car used to be red. Still I'm happy with what I've got. Most of the hard or expensive stuff was done well and I have plenty of time to decide if I want to make changes.

Right now, I think a new cam, carb and manifold. I already have the carb and manifold. Next a 200 4r and a floor shift. Then a sound system.

That's all I have time for now. Thanks for dropping in.

OK Max, i think i am officially jealous. That think is gorgeous. That interior is beautifully done with classic taste. I like the gauges in the radio/AC plate, are you going to keep them there and hide the radio or relocate them when you get the other aftermarket gauges? I am so anxious to bet my Mally to that point, Great buy MAX!!!!!!

Congrats on your purchase. Like lildudefl wrote, finding Malibu specific parts is a bit tougher than for some of the other G-bodys. (GP's may be harder) You've probally already found that out. I've owned mine since 1983 and have been stockpileing parts each time I find something useful at the salvage yards. Nice find. Keep us updated.

Thanks guys.

When I do the dash I am going to add a speedo, tach, volts, vacuum and wideband O2 sensors (one for each side). The speedo and tach will hopefully be 4 inches and the volts, vacuum and o2 will be 2inch. I think thats all that I will be able to get in the dash, so these two guages will probably stay where they are.

For the radio I plan to build a wooden box out of luan panneling and some small wooden braces. I'll cover that with some material that matches the dash and make a face plate to match the one where the guages are. I can bolt the radio box right under the guages and switches.

When I put a/c in next spring, I'll be going aftermarket. There is a company that makes an a/c - heater core that bolts up inside the dash. (nothing in the engine bay except the heater and high and low side a/c lines. The control panel for the a/c is small and should mount just to the right of the steering column just under where the sweep speedo is now. I can run the hoses from the new a/c unit to the stock air registers that are still in the car.

Since you are interested in putting new gauges in, you may be interested in one of these so you can fit more in with better results. It will bolt directly to your dash all u have to do is cut the holes for you gauges

Actually that is not an A/C vent hole 😢 Its just a hole to run the wires through. that is the back of the assembly. The one in plastic bolts to your dash and the one out the plastic attaches to it just as your current set up. Not having the A/C vent is the only Downfall. But hey, just turn the center vents toward the driverside and your good....lol, If your interested i found these on ebay(a great friend for gbody builders  ) I have a 6gauge Autometer setup i will be installing in this. I have been without A/C in all my Gbodys so i think being without the driverside vents will be bearable :?

They ebay seller i got them from doesn't have any more listed currently, i just checked, but just do some searches they will show up. I Know ClassicIndustries Sell a complete setup for the Chevy G-Body dash but the price is $1000. I will build mine for around $550 with all the gauges necessary for me comfort. Whatever you choose take your time and do it clean. Don't wanna disturb that beautiful interior
