Well.
Here she is.
My 1982 Oldsmobile Cutlass (turns out that she`s a 1980 model.)
When you import a car to norway, the date the car get its new licence, it apparently also gets a new birthday.
Here`s the VIN. 3R69NAMXXXXXX. and the A clearly states, that she`s a 1980 model. this is going to be fun, me trying to convince the government, to give me the veteran benefits! When a car is 30 years or older, it`s considered a veteran, and therefor cheaper in both insurance and roadtax!
she startet her life, as a DX model, but with a diesel engine, she was at a disadvantage, from the birth.
as she grew older, and the repairbills piled up, somone took pity, and replaced her dying hart, with a 350 sbc.
gave her a new coat of paint, and a second chance at life.
I am sorry, if my spelling is a bit off, since I`m better at speaking english, than writing it. (fell free, to correct me, as I`m still learning!)
The story behind how she got into my ownership, is a good one, so please bear with me!
My stepdaughter and I, have allways had a soft spot for american cars.
but my interrest startet at the age of 8, when my uncle gave me a ride behind the wheel of his 77 ranchero.
also a ride in a 79 cherokee, was a trigger!
I have been through a lot af riceboxes, and german tanks.
but as you know G-bodys have a special place in my heart, and for the last few years, there have been nothing else, than american vehicles on my property. almost
the only exeption were my daugthers Vw golf.
that golf, was parked, due to my daughters boyfriend.
he had no mechanical sence, and trying to rebuild a golf engine, without tools or knowledge, is never a good idear!
so the darn thing was dead, and I had no intention of doing anything, to that car, exept junking it.
well, after a year, or so, she got dumped by him, and shortly after, I had been overrun by boys, with wagging tales, howling outside the door, as if she was in heat!
something good came out if it though, the many boys, fixed the golf, so at least it would run!
no heat, and the electrical was not in good shape!
she drove it for a couple of months, and parked it outside, when winter came, and forgot everything about it.
in january 2009, I came across an ad, that stated, that
"this old and tired oldsmobile, is looking for a new home, preferbly with someone, with mechanical skills, since the car hasn`t been running for three years. trade with a runner is prefered!"
so I told her to give him a call, and suggest a trade, with the golf!
15 minutes later, she came down the stairs, with a big smile, and said, and I quote.
" He said yes?? what kind of man would trade an oldsmobile, for a golf"
the next day, i got up early, and vent to work, in minus 10 degrees celcius
(thats 14 degrees fahrenheit)
fixing the electrical, in that tempeture, is a bigger problem, than most people think, since the wires are brittle, and will break at the slightest stress!
nonetheless, I got the golf fixed, and we loaded it on a trailer, and a buddy of mine, came in his surburban, and helped my daughter to deliver the darn thing.
It took them 6 hours, to drive the 70 miles, up to hamar, deliver the golf, load up the olds and get back home!
when they got here, we just dropped it to the ground, and my buddy was kind enough, to deliver the rental trailer, at the gasstation!
the next day, I was up early, in order to get the olds fired up, and moved, since it blocked the driveway, and I had to get to work the next day.
I removed the carb, and gave it cleanup, with some carb cleaner, and air.
I blocked of the fuelhose, so she wouldnt suck up any bad fuel.
I tried to fire her up, but she cranked, but no spark.
I tried for a couble of hours, but no luck, so I gave it a rest, and vent inside for a cup of coffee. sitting in the kitchen, i suddenly had an idear.
went outside and poped the hood, on "Ugly betty"
I compared the two enginebays to each other, in order to se any difference.
and I found it, a thick wire from the generator, to the battery, was missing on the olds. so I made one, to fit, and cranked it over, she fired right up!
End of part one
