hey guys i installed a B&M Star Shifter in my 84 SS and i have a mechanical interlock that acts like a neutral safety switch so i cant start the car in any other gear excapt park or neutral. i read the directions for the shifter and iit says its usually a 10 or 12 gauge purple wire and i cannot find the wire that goes from my key to my starter for the mechanical interlock because i have to cut that wire and connect it to the neutral safety switch on the shifter...does anyone know where this wire is????

I think the NSS is usually located on either the linkage at the trans or the column shifter, but I'm not sure.

i took the linkage off when i put the shifter in but the directions say that its a 10-12 gauge purple wire, but i cant fine one that goes towards where the key is inserted

If you have a good look up under the dash on drivers side with a flashlight you should be able to see it. Definately a larger guage of wire than most of the others...and definately purple. This wire also runs to the starter motor

the neutral safety switch is on the top of the column near the firewall. If I were you I'd remove the two bolts on the column to let it drop so you'd have a better view of the wiring. You'll find the purple wire from the ignition switch on the top of the column that'll you see when you drop the column

i pulled the column and i saw this, is that big wire the one i need to cut?

you can use a test lite to make sure the power is only on with the key in the start position on that purple wire

If you already took the backdrive linkage off, then it shouldn't matter ( correct? ) ... Then the column always thinks its in P and will let you start the car anyway. Unless you're needing to connect this interlock to your new shifter somehow?

If you didn't (and you're not), there's a rod that goes from the linkage on the trans to the column. Just take that off. IIRC its just held on w/ a cotter pin on each end. Unless I'm missing something. Better than snipping wires, you can always put it back if you want to go back to stock.

You seem to be over-looking the big picture here.

Leave the linkage from the trans to the column intact.
With that controling your neutral safety and reverse lights, there is no need to cut or run a single wire.
