I got a 74 olds 350 and im in the market for a mini starter..and suggestions on which kind? Thnx guys..

I hope someone does chime in on this, I too would like to know what ones are good, it looks like the best route when I get around to installing the headers. Some searching shows guys have pretty good luck with the MSD mini starter for Olds motors, I have always ran them on SBC and they are a great starter, but a little on the pricey side.

I use the CSR mini starter. Never had a problem with it. I tried a cheaper one before that and it only lasted a summer and a bit

I've used the Powermaster ProXS starter and both the Summit and Jeg's knock-off versions and they have all worked flawlessly in everything I've owned.

The Powermaster is on the 403 turning over around 9.4:1 compression. The Jeg's was on my 455 turning over 9.6:1 compression and the Summit is on the current 455 turning over 11.3:1 compression.
In my opinion, I wouldn't spend the extra $50 or so on the Powermaster as the Jeg's and Summit brand work just as well (and are likely still made by Powermaster anyway).

Well thats a good question. I bought that exact same starter a few years ago and it fit without much of an issue. I had some issues with my timing and ended up frying the starter after a solid day of trying to get it to fire right.(New to that side of the build, so forgive the inexperience) I attempted to get it rebuilt and turns out that it is a chinese rip off of a Nippndenso starter and the rebuild parts for a nippendenso would not fit the summit chasis. So I ordered a new one, but the same starter. When it arrived apperently summit had changed the casting on it the way it was put together was almost backwards to my original, so it didn't fit. Then I ordered a powermaster and it did not fit either. After all of that I went to a different shop and they sent my orginal summit starter to world motors in detoit and they ended up making it work. So long story short, it all depends on your headers. If you look at my build thread you'll see what i'm talking about.

Now if i can remember the oem start that goes on a 307..is the starter i had onit for years...and i could it between the headers and it cleared...then i ordered a power master oem starter for a 74 olds and it was completely different and way bigger..so thats y im concerned..idk if i should call summit and see what uthey suggest..

307's had a smaller starter than the older stuff. The OEM starter for a '74 would be the typical HUGE starter and the reason why so many go with an aftermarket mini-starter.

That being said, there is no guarantee that an aftermarket mini-starter will clear your headers. And Summit will likely be of no help unless you're talking about a Chevy....

Has anybody bought a 307 starter from say Rock Auto, it would obviously be cheaper than most all mini starters
