Mint aint Mint

Back when I was 14 and knew nothing about cars, I began looking for a project car that turned out to be my Regal. I bought it from a guy who I'm fairly certain had a drug problem based on the empty stamp bags that I later found under the back seats, and I had to go to Homewood to buy it and Homewood is not a particularly friendly or affluent part of town.

But I showed up, the car started right up, blue smoke out the tailpipe like a mother, valve covers leaked like crazy, but it ran okay and went through all the gears. Before I really began looking at the body the seller assured me there was "very little rust". Then I looked at the trunk lid-rot. The door bottoms-rot. Quarters behind the rear tires-rotted and patched with an old speed limit sign (that was probably stolen). Bottom of the driver's A-pillar- swiss cheese. Passenger rocker panel- gone. B- pillars at the corners of the quarter windows- holes. I looked underneath and it looked like the floors were solid, and they were, everywhere except where the heat shield for the cat was hiding the hole in the passenger floor pan.

At the time, all I knew about these cars was it was common for the rear frame rails to rot out. The rear frame rails were solid, and it ran and drove, and it had new (obviously lick and stick) inspection stickers on it. And I was 14 and knew nothing about cars and had no patience at all to go look at another car so I bought it. Leaked gas on the road the entire way home!

So knowing what I know now, I probably wouldn't have bought it, but hindsight is 20/20 and in the end it all worked out. There was a huge learning curve and I had a lot of help from some good guys and learned a lot right here on the forum.

But I'll never forget that seller trying to assure me the car had "very little rust."

Looking at how well your car turned out I would never have realized how much work it needed from the beginning to get there.

As stated, mint is a relative term. Like " a little rusty" means something different to mean than "2 surface rust spots no bigger than a dime". It's sad to have to waste time because your definition of mint and theirs don't match. I always love the "threats" sellers make when you start to walk away. I had one guy tell me if I didn't buy his car (a 68 442 beater) that he was going to send it to the junkyard. I replied that would be doing that car a great service.

Obviously it's ALWAYS buyer beware. The seller wants to sell, and the buyer likely may buy if they perceive they're getting a good deal. Sometimes the sellers fib or outright lie, or attempt to deceive. I've never tried to sell anything without disclosing flaws that I'm aware of (sometimes I'm not aware of them). I describe as accurately as I can, and if the buyer still wants it, they know what they're getting. No intentional surprises. Wish every seller was like that. Some sellers are just A**holes.

Of course, there's the buyer A**holes too. Those are the ones that try to lowball you on your rock-bottom price (when it's already been stated that's as low as you go) and try to nit pick the crap out of something you have already described as having flaws and what not. And some, you just KNOW they're tire kickers with no intention on buying. Sometimes it's a matter of principle. If you piss me off acting like a butt, then no matter what price you offer, it ain't going anywhere. I'm at the point in my life I don't ever have to sell a damn thing to get by. I might even sell it to the next guy for lower just because he didn't act like a dlckhole.

Parts can be mint. Complete cars...….not so much.

I got a weird story. Years ago when I was looking for a complete 305 to install in my Regal, found one guy on a forum selling a complete running one. Moreover, he was a bit flakey on what day to meet at his house but we finally settled on a day and time. So I show up on the agreed time at his house and the seller isn't home. However, the seller's father was home and acted very surprised and confused about the whole deal, guess his son never told him. He calls his son's cell and tells him to get home. In the meantime, the father shows me the engine in their garage and it looks good. Then the father tells me the carb is not included in the price I agreed upon with his son who promised a complete engine. The dad claims the Qjet bolted on the engine belongs to him and wants an extra $100 for it.

On top of that, the son had told me on the forum PMs that the engine had 90k on it. The father told me that is what the guy they bought the motor from told them! So they were not even the original owners and facing maybe two levels of lies. The deal was quickly going down the crapper and I said bye and left. Don't know if the son was trying to sell his dad's stuff from under him or if the dad was trying to pull a fast one on me, but the situation was getting bad really fast. After that I always asked if there are more than one owner for the item being sold.

I ended up making a sale to a guy that went to look at another car, was lied to about the condition of the other car and called me up since he had already traveled with money/trailer. He showed up 10 mins after i got home from work and had the car loaded up within the hour and cash was in my hand.

My strategy was to show the bad in my pictures rather than the good, worked out this time.
