My opinion is that running more base timing and vacuum advance ported tends to make the P-D and P-R transition smoother as the timing doesn't change. The rest could be vacuum leak related. You guys brought up a good point on the PCV too. Most carbs are calibrated to run with the PCV -- which is essentially a metered vacuum leak. Without it they can be nearly impossible to tune at idle.
