then there's no reason for the engine not to run so I'd go back and start rechecking everything......

when itt does run is there gas comeing out the exhaust at all (unburned)

with a backfire through the carb, my bet is on timing. Could possibly be the module in the distributor, but when those go, it is usally all or nothing as far as working or not.

Bring the engine to TDC, timing mark on the harmonic balancer to 0. Then take the drivers side valve cover off, and see where the valves are (either both closed, intake open or exhaust open). If they are not both closed, then chances are that the timing is way off, and might have been done accidentally when replacing the timing chain and gear.

It is said that when replacing the timing gear and chain you should degree in your cam again, becuase as nice as it would be that things are perfectly manufactured, they probably arent right on. So just lining up the dots isnt a sure fire way to get the timing on correctly.

Just my 2 cents from past experience and reading.

i replaced the control module in the new distributor. would it pay off to buy a new cam??? how do you reset the cam on that????

What carb are you running?

What type of fuel filter? If you are running a rochester Qjet, and the fuel filter is one of those that goes into the carb, make sure that you have the filter installed correctly. I have seen them installed backwards.

Could be that the carb is messed up, and floats stuck. Hence the fuel out the tails and the poping. Do you have another carb to try?

It sucks trying to troubleshoot over the internet. Too many variables and hard to diagnose.

I doubt it's the cam if the engine was running reasonably well before this problem. A worn cam would give you a rough idle and poor performance which would worsen over time

Unless the cam snapped. Probably very unlikely, but it cant hurt to see if the rockers are moving.

EDIT: I take that back. If it was broken it wouldn't have spark 😳
