right now i have a sbc 350 in my 84 regal. im looking to do something alse, was thinking a 383 or 400 sbc. any pros or cons on these engines, or suggestions? i thought maybe ls too, but wasnt too sure. any advise or tips would be appreciated

The 350 thats in there is a 2 bolt main, so id probably start fresh. Just asking because I had heard 400s run hot? Thought possibly big block, but dont know how much more weight that would add. Really dont know what direction to go, just explorimg options. In the end id like around 425hp

Big block will be more fun if you have the money to swing it, not only for the build but then to gas mileage which will be pretty horrendous if you like to get friendly with the loud pedal.

They don't weigh THAT much more than a small block, I've never put them on a scale but an all iron SBC is supposed to weigh in around 575 pounds, and an all iron BBC should weigh in under 700 lbs 685 is what I read. Relocate the battery to the back, get a fiberglass hood, aluminum intake, aluminum water pump, and use headers instead of manifolds... I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't even have to put big block springs in it. With the battery relocated, and some lighter than stock parts I doubt if overall there would be 75 lbs more weight on the front than stock.

Big block or LS will be the cheapest way to get 425hp. If your looking for better fuel mileage get the LS. 5.3s are dirt cheap and 400hp can be had with a cam swap and headers.

How cheap are the 5.3s, and is it a lot of work/money to change over to fuel injection?

5.3's can be found for around $500 but a wiring harness can run $500 to $700 for a fuel injection harness. Its about $650 for the carb intake and ignition. They make a swap kit for them Muscle Rods made by hedman it runs about $1250 for the motor mounts trans crossmember and headers, pretty pricey. Here's the website http://www.brphotrods.com/

You can modify the harness yourself. There is plenty of write-ups on it. The fuel system is fairly cheap and easy as well. Grab a turbo regal gas tank and throw a new walbro fuel pump in it.
