Could you give us some idea of transmission and rear axle ratio? Is the transmission a 3 or 4 speed? Does the car have a cap on the cargo bed? I have a friend with an S10 pickup, and he gets better gas mileage without a cap than with the cap on. A little bit more info would be helpful.

3 speed, no cap on the cargo bed, couldn't tell you the rear axle ratio, i'm kind of new at this. But it is straight piped, could that affect mpg noticeably?

What do you mean by straight piped? Are you saying that there is no muffler or catalytic converter? Straight pipe from the engine to the rear?

that should help with mpgs then.. less backpressure.. also an expensive upgrade would be to put a od trans in.. a 700r4 or 200r4.. would help considerably.

That's what the plan is if I can't find a cheaper solution, I've seen computer chips that claim to increase HP, torque, MPG, etc. It seems kind of a like a fluke to me, do you have any experience with these or have heard anything about them?

DO NOT buy chips, unless there the flavored kind. i like sour cream and onion. yer best bet for mpg is 1 od trans, 2 check out yer rear end to make sure its not boogered up. cus if thats slipping, its bacily a coffee grinder and the coffee is yer gears. not good. also if the rear gear should be a low # to help with the mpg, but it wont help with the mph. another thing is the less yer car weighs, the less your engine has to work to get it up and going. oh and not burying yer foot in it all the time helps to lol. also since yer car is tbi make sure you still have the o2 sensor in yer exhaust, because that meters yer exhaust and tells the computer how much gas to give the tb. so without that it might be flooding the engine giving you bad mpg.

Most vehicle manufacturers design their vehicles to run their best with a certain amount of backpressure in the exhaust system. The fact that you're running a straight pipe exhaust MAY be part of your problem. Other people have made some good suggestions as well.

still 9-10 gallons dosent sound right just becuase of mufflers something must really be messed up somewhere in your system. I'm no pro but mabey the engine just needs to be upgraded to a 454 so the mpg is actully proper instead of 9 mpg from a v6 you can have 9 mpg from a 454

Tell us what happends if you figure this issue out.

The rear does slip, I thought it was the u-joints so I replaced em now I realized the fluid is filthy, so next week when I get Turkey Break i'm going to drain and fill the rear, hopefully it'll help out. The carb rebuild already seems to have helped a bit. I'll figure out how to check the o2 sensor and get back to you on that. Thanks for all the suggestions guys 8)

If the exhaust has been messed with, i wouldnt be surprised if you have had your manifolds/headers replaced and you may have lost your o2 sensor along the way. That would be a death sentence for your gas mileage with these CCC controlled cars and your car's computer would be wondering what the hell is going on. is your check engine light on?
