So I finally got my MSD 6al to install in my Monte..A friend of mine ,who is great with electronics and is very neat I might add installs it for me......So anyways, as were checking out the "GM Ignitions" section in the booklet that came with the unit there is a -NOTE: some 5-pin models may experience a hesitation or stall on deceleration. If this occurs, contact MSD tech line for the required bolt-in diode to correct the problem. So as luck would have it, I have the 5-pin model that they are talking about..WTF Once it was neatly installed as soon as the car fired up it stalled right out..Started it and revved it up, was fine at 1500 rpm's and higher, let off the gas and stall out...So we disconnect the power to the MSD and hook it back up as it was originally and all was good. called MSD and they are sending me a 5-pin module on the goose...Anyways, what causes this???

Stupid question here; why is the MSD better than a stock recurved HEI? My past g-body with Olds 455 & Hei had mid 12 sec track times..

Joe,
I assume that the 6AL requires a module in the distributor? When I used a 6A, it would eliminate and bypass the module in the distributor using a small wiring harness. I guess the 6AL works differently besides having the rev limiter option.

I ended up eliminating the 6A box and went back to using a performance module in an Accel distributor and high voltage coil.
This is after the box crapped out and left me on the side of the road. I haven't had ignition trouble since.

I'm not using a module with my 6AL. I thought the only reason for keeping the module would be to work with the CCC system?

Foxtrot-There isn't anything (majorly) wrong with a stock HEI. But they tend to fall off at 4000+ rpm. I assume with your 455 you barley spun it to 5000rpm. If you plan on running 6000+ then you can benefit from better HEI components or go with an aftermarket setup like MSD.
