Well i ant tell you which one is better but I can tell you I have been running the same blaster 2 coil for 5+yrs now with no issues. In my opinion they are both an msd product an mostlikely equally the same in qaulity. But the ss looks alot cooler.

I have only ran and MSD Blaster coil and that is on my LT1 car. It has been a little over 2 years now and it seems to be working well still.

Does it make a difference that the blaster 2 is 45,000volts while the SS is 40,000 volts?

Which coil would you get if you were buying. That's where I'm at right now

Oh ok. I like the looks of the SS over the blaster. I have a less on a bnib blaster 2 for $30. But one thing I notice on msd's website the list the blaster2 is listed as a stock replacement and the SS is listed as a street/strip coil

The SS has 5,000 volts less but is has 300ma vs the 150ma of the blaster 2 and also less resistance than the blaster 2 as well

And finally SS means solid state I believe, as I know its epoxy instead of oil filled

I wouldn't rely on the volts being what they say they are..that's the maximum volts the units can put out, not the actual voltage.

So how can we figure out which coil is superior?

the difference between the two wouldn't have any effect that you would notice. I bought the ss cause it's not oil filled and it's easier to mount where I wanted to locate it. Plus the most important thing, it looks better..
