This is 100% cruiser and I don't want it to sound like a race car -- just a bit more rumble than stock. The reason for the upgrade is that the system is just plain used up. I have a pipe bender at work and plan to run duals down both sides and over the rearend to the stock transverse muffler location. I'd like to either use a single dual inlet/outlet muffler or possibly stack a pair of small mufflers (preferably not traditional glasspacks) and then twin tailpipes out the original locations on both sides. I know it would be easier to just order up a Pypes system or something similar but that's not really what I want.

So my question is, what muffler(s) have you guys used that fit the stock location and have a mellow tone?

A thrush turbo. Or any brand turbo muffler. You can order em cheap on eBay, especially if you get a non name brand turbo. They are small and quiet with a slightly deeper tone than stock at idle. They will open up a lil at wide open, but they are still considerably quiet.

The GN has turbo muffler with 2 in and 2 out and it sounds pretty good on a 305. I had the GN exhaust on my GP for a couple of summers

I think the GN muffler will work also and you could probably just use GN replacement tailpipes.
I personally do not like the limited access to shocks. control arms and rearend cover having the muffler behind the rear axle and could not wait to cut that off and put the 442 exhaust on my Regal.

Wow, sometimes the obvious solution is the best one. For some reason I thought the GN was a single inlet / dual outlet muffler like the 3rd gen Camaros. Looks like Rockauto has all the GN parts too.
Thanks, guys. Problem solved.

If the parts are Walker/ Dynomax numbers I would shop around I got some better prices than Rockauto that included free shipping.
Carpartkings on Ebay was one place I got parts from for my 442 exhaust.

Check out the Dynomax Ultra - Flow for that GN application. The Ultra - Flow is stainless and just slightly more aggressive sound than stock and higher flow than stock. I put one on an 85 Delta 88 (307) as a direct fit and was really happy with it. I thought it suited the car well. It gave the car a nice mellow tone whereas before it was basically silent.

Greetings Driven & all; I know that you're looking for a system to mount in the stock location & use the stock hangers as I remember how stout they were built. Mine (OE muffler hanger bracket) is in a box somewhere. But you may want to consider my old (1992) 304 Stainless Steel system as it is posted in the classified area. With your modest compression & cam once you move the mufflers you will have many choices for mufflers that should be mellow enough for you. Using my old pipes with new Stainless mufflers you could have a all Stainless system. And the tail pipes come out in the OE position & the still look good (subjective of course) Please take a look at my post, Bob Jr.
