what about if i put the lights behind the grill?

Lotsa room behind the grill.

When I first got my '80 cutlass the owner before me lived in the country and he put 2 big *ss ( like a good 7" or so around ) Yellow Hella lights behind the grill. In addition to that he had 2 bright white driving lights up and behind the front bumper and pointed down on a 45 deg angle so you could not really see them.

The harness was burnt up when I bought the car ( wonder why ?!?! ) so I cut them all off but it must have been bright.

Point is you can install them and hide them at the same time.

behind the grille sounds good, like the camaro lights?

Granted it is a one year only nose, If you can't find an '80 nose for less than $300, you're not looking in the right places.
It shouldn't cost more than $150 at the most, as it's not the most desirable year(sorry '80 fans).
$300 is what the '87-'88 euro noses go for.

You are better off going with the rectangular sheby style driving lights. At least you would keep them the same shape as the headlights.

hmmm some big round Hellas up front, contigency stickers and offroad tires. We can faux-up a new model the 1980 Ols Cutlass "Rally" 350.
If it were me (well OK I was doing this to my 87 when it was stolen) I found some really small rectangular lamps and installed them behind the bumper ... were they were virtually unseen when off. I know it's personal preferrence but I hate ... HATE lights just hanging down off the bumper. I had replaced the bumper on my car ... so I had a chance to seperate the bumper, repaint the bumper support .... installed the lights inside the support and bolted the bumper back before I installed the assembly. You'd have to know they were there to look for the lights.

nevermind, I looked at that bumper again ... no recesses like the later models ... still stick with small rectangular ... tuck emm behind your grilles like a squad car strobe lights.
