I just bought my 81' El Camino a couple weeks ago. The previous owner told me he had a 600 CFM holley put on, and the Quadrajet was included in the sale.

Anyway, two questions.

1: How do I tell what kind of Holley it is? I took a quick glance and didn't see casting numbers.

2: I'm guessing since this is an 81', there is a computer involved, especially since I saw connectors on the old Quadrajet. Is my ignition now effected? I have no problem ditching the computer, I just need guidance. I'm not looking to keep this 305 stock, so all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

The Q-jet is best because it belongs on there. I would put it back on and see what's up and if it is defective a rebuild would be in order. But if the Holley works well, then the other way to go would be to backfit a non-CCC HEI distributor and remove all other CCC components. Then you would tune to pre-emissions specs which can be a headache if you are not fluent in tuning procedures.

Hey, I'm a big big fan of the Quadrajet carb, But if that small 600CFM Holley works great then I would leave it on there.

The car is already missing its smog pump, so the process has already been started. What cfm was the Quadrajet?

The average Q-jet is rated at 750cfm, but don't go by that alone. It is a versatile carb that has been used on everything from 6 cylinder's to 455's. It all depends on what's inside and it will only give the motor what it needs.
