My New Daily Driver? Am I Nuts For Thinking It?

did u see the central florida road course thing? im considering building my suspension up to run that.

Are you talking about the track in Orlando? I was thinking of going there to run their track days and work towards a competition license. That way, I can run on any track.

maybe? idk, i just found out about it today, apparently its brand new, 1 mile road course. they do road course on wednesdays, autocross and drifting on fridays and more road course on saturdays, and they offer classes to get different licenses. but yeah it is in orlando

I say always have 2 cars, I don't care the circumstance. I'm in a bind now because I relied heavily on my 06 mustang, but after the transmission went out (over warranty) and a big "accident" occured, I found myself relying on my wife to get to work and back. Decided to get a cutlass to be my daily and it's already costing me an arm and a leg. When I get it rolling right, I'm going to have to get another car just in case the gbody puts me down. NOTHING sucks worse than having to bum rides, even if it is from family. I wouldn't live anywhere I couldn't have 2 cars. I'm planning on having 3 before the summer is out.

With the work you've already done, your car should be a super good daily driver. Probably more reliable or JUSt as reliable as a new car. You know what you're doing, so you should be able to maintain it and fix the few dings and dangs that come up. Can't see why you can't put 300,000 miles on your car. Do it. Just have a backup plan.

Well, I currently have 3 cars, but I just can't in this case. If I really needed 100% reliability, I guess I would have to buy a new car with a 100k mile warranty and drive that for the next 3 years. I basically will go from now, where I have $1100 in monthly bills to around $160 in monthly bills- car insurance and cell phone only. I would be able to borrow my mom's Maxima or dad's Frontier if I had to, but I would rather not. I love the Frontier I have now, but it is getting on in years and miles with 319,000 miles as of tonight. It needs work now (minor stuff) and keeping it would cost me about $200 a month between storage and insurance.

I say drive it! I used to put over 100 miles a day on my Malibu wagon before I stopped driving it last summer.

I think your idea of renting your house but keeping the garage for yourself is a good idea. That way, you can stash whatever tools and parts you'll need and you'll have a place to do a quick repair on your car if need be.

I know you're proud of how reliable your truck has been for you, but it's at the mark where stuff is going to start failing, so it's probably best to let it go.

Stock 2004r trans? I added hardened pump rings and spring, BO billet servo, Trans go big shift kit, and modified my governor for higher than my crappy 3000 rpm shifts. I am now shifting at 4000+ rpm. I also added a Hughes deep aluminum pan and modified a 700r4 filter to work with an extension. I put a pretty big cooler on it too. Mine is the original 88 trans so it will have more upgrades. Shifts nice and firm and goes down into first nicely when you slow down, Much better than the stock mushy calibration. Also consider a used(in good shape) or new not used Lockright on ebay for less. Super easy to install(no gear setup) and much better traction. A girdle cover is also a good idea, keeps the caps from walking, I think that's why my Powertrax No Slip is still holding together.

I already have a GM cone posi out of a 78 Cutlass which is what I am using. Also, what you suggested is WAY out of my budget. If I do a TH200 4R again, it will be junkyard sourced for $75-with converter. Anything more and I might as well do the 5 speed because it will be cheaper. (Yes, I do things on budgetary extremes most would shudder in horror just thinking about!) To convert to the 5 speed will probably cost me about $200-300 more than what I have spent already on the conversion. As it is, I am almost making no money because of the economic downturn, and I have no real savings or credit either. I figure if I don't sell the house soon, I will end up losing it. I honestly can't hope to finish the Cutlass without selling my other project car plus my left over parts and using the funds from that to buy the remaining parts needed for assembly. Sadly, I am so stressed out right now that I can't sleep more than a few hours and have no energy to work on the Cutlass because of that. I hope that my stress level goes down when school is out for the Summer so I can get everything in motion to sell the house by fall.

Yah, I guess it adds up to about $750 in that trans. I am also running full synthetic fluid which is stupid expensive up here, AMS is $10 a quart up here on sale. I am waiting to start driving a cement truck, I am tired of sitting around, need more money too.

Go for it! Insuring the Cutlass has to be cheaper than any newer daily driver. Sure you might spend more on gas , but hopefully the savings on insurance will offset that. I would stay with the 2004r transmission. If reliability is the only concern invest it in a quality rebuilt transmission. That's been your biggest problem with it so far from what I read. The T5 is not a very good transmission and would require way too much time to install it. Your biggest investment will be the transmission, but that's also what makes your car more reliable and with overdrive saves on gas money. I would NOT take it to ANY track day. I don't care how well the car is put together any racing and your bound to break something at a time you can't afford it.

Your doing the right thing by going back to school. I would be if I could make it happen. This economy is tough right now. With 17 years experience as a Toolmaker I am faced with being out of work anyday now. I am fixing the wagon up to be a daily driver myself. If s#!t hits the fan that will be my daily driver and I'll get rid of the new mini-van we have. I am looking at a Pontiac 400/TH400 and going to a 9 inch with 3.25 gears. Mileage won't be the best but insurance will be cheap and the car is paid for.
