My Rant: Why Quadrajets are better than Edelbrock carbs

Something is definitely wrong. Believe it or not the problem is likely related to the tall gears.

That is true. Pushing dead gears is hard on the motor, trans, and rear. Plus you hate how slow it is and figure you'll just floor it to get it going allready. There goes the mileage. It needs to be driven as they used to say "like there's an egg between your foot and the gas pedal". But who wants to do that? As I see it there's three things you can do. Put better gears in, 3:08 - 3:23 'ish. Put a two barrel on it like it should have had with those granny gears. Rejet it super lean so you can't burn gas even if you wanted too, and that will force you to drive with a light foot. Don't laugh at the 2-barrel. I had an 80' Firebird with 2:41 gears. No amount of tuneing would get the 4 barrel to work with it. Swapped a 2 barrel set up on and wowsers it woke right up! And started getting 18 mpg too.

Ritter ,
sad to say ,but 73 was in the dark era of smog low power ,low efficiency engines ...

do you have those pipes going on the manifolds & air pump ..if so , take them off .
do you still have the restrictor caps on the idle needle screws ?

It has absolutely NO emissions whatsoever. The quadrajet that is currently on it is an '85 Chevy truck carb with the dual capacity selenoid (something like that) and I was told that will make it constantly run rich

I don't run manifolds. All my mods are in my signature

Looking at what you have in your sig, the valves in your heads are really small. Are you sure that your intake valve is not a 1.94 as most 350 stock heads utilized this. The stock iron intake isn't doing you any justice either. If your going for good torque on bottom end and mid range then get a performer intake and you'll be very happy. That along with good timing and you should notice a considerable difference in how rich/lean your motor runs.

Personally, I wouldn't put quadrajunk on my motor. If I was going to put any kind of spread bore carb on my car it would be a carter thermoquad carb. Now I'll say that I don't know the knitty gritty like 85cutlassbrougham might know. My specialty is motors, drivetrain combos, and body work. In my experiences, for some reason, the thermoquad outperformed the quadrajet on both chryslers and chevys.

quadrajunk : is this because it`s the only thing you dint exceed in toying with !
I ran 11.79 on a B/S W30 with a world record of 10.57 .....
and this with a stock massaged quadrajet .....
I dont like holleys on street ,but i dont call them junk for that reason !

the quadrajet ran on millions of cast iron intakes without any issues ....
but i admit that if he really has 1.72 intake valves + 2.41 gears , he will never have any performance..

I'm pretty good at tuning carbs and have always had problems with q-jets including the stock one that came on my 305. So I think they're junk.

Just like my dad has always had bad luck with fords throughout his life and he thinks they're junk. I think there junk cause I've tried working on them and they're cheaper than boss hog donating to an orphanage.

I have a good friend with a '37 Chevy Sedan, 455 Buick, mild cam, Edelbrock manifold, dual-feed 750 Holley. After hearing years of complaints about poor mileage and lazy response, I built him a Q Jet from a good Buick core I had been saving for 30 years. A few jet/rod changes and fuel mileage went up 50%, with instant throttle response and a good top-end pull. The only thing I couldn't improve upon was the wow factor at a cruise with the big Holley and its chrome fuel line with integral pressure gauge. A few months of smart comments from his buddies at the cruises, and the Q Jet went back on the shelf. Sometimes you just can't win.

I use to do mud drags ....
had a 69 351W modified in a 76 bronco .....
never opened my hood except for officials ......the truck was so performing that everyone wanted to see!
I was racing the last contender for the year title ,blew the timing chain at 65000rpm in the hole =imagine the rest !

so i lost the title , but when the officials opened the hood in the mud hole , a crowd gathered around .

their eyes almost pop out when they saw a quadrajet on my intake

thay coulndt figure that i ran that hard with a quadrajunk

like i previously said: you really have to know them to gain all the potential ...they are not user friendly like holleys or anything else !
