My Rant: Why Quadrajets are better than Edelbrock carbs

The owner of the race car I crew on bugs me to let him put a holley on my GP...I run a qjet that I have had built by a local guy who is known for building qjets. He takes a newer qjet and modifies it to an older version and builds them to suit the engine and for what the customer wants.....he built mine for performance and fuel economy and if you check the air fuel mixture at cruising rpms you'll find a somewhat lean mixture but when opening it up it's like I dropped a gear. I have had holly's in the past and I don't like them. I thought the Eldebrocks are built similar to a qjet , I have never used them but a local speed shop owner swears by them...

Q-jets also excel for crawlers/4x4s. The great low-end torque and throttle response isn't the only reason. Due to the small, center, single float bowl, they do not have the tendency to flood out as bad as Carter/Edelbrock when on a side hill. They tend to be more consistent than center-hung Holleys while going up or down steep grades. Obviously, EFI would be the ultimate choice. While I was attending a technical school many years ago several students who were Ford and Dodge guys were converting to Quadrajets with great success. We were all poor students who couldn't afford EFI conversions and found that this was the next best thing.

forgot to mention this one ...I had a CJ with a 258 I-6 with hedmann headers ,offy intake and Q-jet.

I did very rough trail with quite offcamber areas never did it deceive me ! poor man injection ! lollllllll

but i admit that if he really has 1.72 intake valves + 2.41 gears , he will never have any performance..
The car has decent power, that's not what I am complaining about, just the gas mileage. I took a little riced out 240SX the other night very easily, so without any heavier mods I was pretty impressed. It has a shift kit and chirps the one wheel at barely half throttle (which still impresses me). The head casting numbers checked out to be 235hp 350 heads with 1.72"/1.50" valves. I didn't actually measure the valves myself though.

...forgot to mention, I was getting 16mpg around town with the Buick 350/TH350 with a large jetted Edelbrock 1405 (same rearend of course) that was in the car when I bought it

Gm stuck those tiny valves on the sbc was just stupid. They had the Olds 350, a much better truck engine. Especially with poor gearing.

Ritter, that truck carb should be even leaner than a stock 73' carb would be. And all the solenoid does is bleed off 1/2 the pump shot when the motor gets hot which should be even better for mileage. Only thing I hate on those is the rear mounted choke pull off, what a crappy design. Maybe you should open up that 78' carb and see what's inside. If I had a choice what core to build up it would be the 78'.

i have a qjet and it works good but when its cold it revs up good and good response but when it warms up some it revs fine but takes alittle longer for it to idle back down to normal. i dont know if i said that right but does anyone no what causes it. is it the cold air that makes it have a better response. should i put a cold air intake on it or is the car out of adjustment

It is designed to work with a heated air cleaner for driveability and mileage, so don't put a cold air setup on it. That's just a scam played on unsuspecting rodders to seperate them from their money. There hasn't been a hot air intake since the last carbureted car came off the assembly line. If you don't believe me, go look at any modern car- cold air. The computer adjusts for the ambient air temp. You may have a vacuum leak, weak return springs, swolen carb base gasket, sticky throttle linkage or something else.

ok thanks that helps me out. i wasnt 100% sure on anything really
