I have a 1987 Olds Cutlass Supreme Brougham with a stock 307. My alternator crapped out. I got one off a buddy of mine that he bought for his and never used it. Its a reman one. I put it on and it wasn't charging very well. It finally started putting out over 14 volts and I thought good its fixed. Wrong. I drove it around and the charge light would dimly flicker and come on from time to time. I go home made sure all my belts were tight and checked all my wires. I drove it to work and the light would flicker again and came on. I would put the gas pedal to the floor and the light would go out briefly. When I got about 5 minutes from work the charge light came back on and wont go back out. I tried revving the engine and no luck. I should have a replacement alternator delivered today and will swap it out but right now I am very doubtful that will solve my issues. I am stumped and getting frustrated. Any information will be very appreciated.

Why? Sounds to me you have a crap alternator and if you replace it with a good one everything should be fine.

The alternator shouldn't be putting out over 14 volts and then it died so it sounds like there was a problem with the regulator on your friend's alternator.
