That's a lot of work...ask me how I know, lol. Here's the link to my firebird build on P-T
http://www.pro-touring.com/showthread.p ... &highlight

If the Olds is like my resto, it actually costs more to find orginal steel (junk yard and NOS) compared to some of the repro companies. If he can do the work himself and deal with drilling out a ton of spot welds and 40+ year old rust, then I say go for it. The firebird is my first shot at something this big and I'm doing alright. You just need to separate the project into smaller, achievable components.

Trust me I know he is looking at $15,000 to $25,000 to restore the body but he doesn't want to listen
He wants to restore himself so I'm not arguing with I'm going to just try to help find parts.

So long as he knows he's spending $25K to get a $15K car... Not that I'VE ever done anything like that. Oh no.

Most parts from a 69 442 or a 2 door cutlass will fit on a 68. Parts that dont fit are hood, trunk lid, front and rear bumpers, grills, rear tail lights. The front fenders will fit, but you need to be modify mounting location for hood hinges. Back in the late 80's when I restored my 69 442 W30 4 speed the bone yards were full of 68-69 cars, those days are gone. Your friend should spend the $25k on a car thats done and keep the rusted 442 as a parts car.

I am going to be scouting a couple big yards sometime in the near future once the weather breaks a bit (one in Watertown and one in Binghampton area), lots of old stuff, I can keep my eyes peeled for ya, don't know how rust free though.

oldsmoletick the yard in watertown wouldent happen to be the fars in brownsville would it i live in canada and probibly went there 10 times last summer there are around 8500 old cars in there not much for g bodys though where is the yard in binghampton were going to be going through there on the way to spring carlisle this year

When i built the 68 that i had about 8 years ago there wasnt alot of body parts for the 68-69 body styles,no one made front fenders but you could get the rear quarters for them.I bought alot of stuff from places like yearone.com and opgi.com (original parts group) and also just keep seaching ebay constantly. Good luck

Yup I believe it is the one in Brownsville, lol. The one near Binghampton, is actually in Maine, NY, closer to whitney point, but it's off of route 26.
