Hi everyone. I have an 88 monte carlo ss. Car starts... Runs rough... sputters.... then dies. Have to keep foot on gas to keep it running. Replaced fuel filter and fuel pump. Checked vacuum hoses also. Any ideas? Thanks.

It sounds like it is either getting too much air or not enough gas or both. You seem on the right track. What does it idle at? Does pulling spark plugs or spraying starting fluid on the outside of the motor change the idle?

Mine was running like that last year. Turned out to be the distributor got loose and moved slightly.

Hi. It wont idle on it's own. Soon as I let off the gas it dies right out. You are absolutely right. It does seem like no gas. That's why I replaced the pump and filter. I haven't checked plugs yet. It died out right in the intersection after sitting at a stop light. Had to two foot it home. Stopped at the gas station and put gas in it after it t died... thinking it ran out of gas fuel to a faulty gauge reading. Still was the same.

Put your hand over carb while running to see if it revs up. If it does it is running lean. Check for vacuum leaks and also the base carb gasket. If it is puffing black smoke it is rich and it could be a bad cannister purge valve or some debris under the needle for the float
