I personally like the SS idea as a donor because of all the extra goodies you get with them (suspension, steering ect), plus alot of them came with pretty much all the comfort options like air.

thanks for the info guys. Everything should be a direct bolt swap with my grand prix vs the monte ss I take it?

Yeah, as far as I know everything mechanical will interchange, and since you had a chevy motor in it already you should be good to go. If it were me I'd swap most of the suspension, (what every turns out to be SS specific) and I'd slap that quick ratio steering box in it as well. You can even go as far a down dressing that 400 to look (almost) like a stock 305 if you want to.

for the evaporator get a new one..they're not expensive and a new one will give you alot cooler air than a used one.......
