does anybody know where the neutral safety switch is located on a 78 malibu it has the factory column shifter im putting a floor shifter in

it's on the column and you don't have to made any modifications for the switch when putting in a floor shifter. The linkage from the transmission is still attached to the arm on the column so nothing on the column needs to be changed

Once again, there is NO neutral safety switch on any 1978-1988 A/G body car. These cars use a mechanical linkage to block the key from rotating to the START position unless the trans is in Park or Neutral. This linkage requires the backdrive link to be connected from the trans to the steering column. The electrical switch at the base of the steering column is NOT a neutral safety switch and is not electrically connected to the starter circuit. This switch controls the backup lights and (on computer controlled carbs) signals the ECU that the trans is in Park or Neutral for the purpose of controlling idle speed only. On a non-computer 1978, only the backup light terminals will be connected on this switch.
