Wondering what you guys are using for break-in oil i got a email fro my builder and he said to make sure to use break in oil untill at least 2,000 miles and some kind of zddp additive anyone do this never noticed at the stores is this common at the store or a special order item.

Break in oils are essential for flat tappet cam engines.

A thread on the main page is talking about Valvoline VR1 which is fairly cheap and has a high ZDDP content. Otherwise, I think Shell Rotella T, which is made for diesel applications, has a higher ZDDP content and works well in gas engines also.

Someone else will chime in.

My local parts store has additive for break in. Its a little on the exspensive side at $15 a bottle. One bottle is good for 5qts.

Hey, I Broke My Engine In with Rotella-T 10w-40 because I thought it had the correct zinc amount, but found out that rotella started taking zinc (zddp) out of thier oils, so i also added a bottle of Lucus Oil Break-In Additive. Motor Broke In With No Issues!

I used Rotella with a bottle of Comp Cams additive just for added insurance on my last build. A $12 bottle is cheaper than replacing a flat cam. No problems so far.
