Hey guys! just joined this Gbody thing and thought I might say hello. Been out of the street scene for quite a few years and got back in...but with a G body this time...not an A! This project started off as an 81 Malibu/229V6/TH350/7.5 diff w/2.73 gears. 31 mpg on a 45mile commute lasted for a while but just did not cut it. Fast forward to a sweet running 81 305 for $50, yes, a 305!!! A used set of Hookers for $30, Edelbrock Performer for $25, I had a Qjet rebuilt from a 73 Vette, some other misc. donated parts, a Hurst Auto Stick 1 from eBay..........this list goes on and on. I just installed yesterday a 7.5 from an 83 Monte SS, 3.73 posi with the sway bar for a C note. The dash is a custom you might say, with an Autometer tach, speedo and fuel gauge in the center pod, and the black plastic panel on the pass. side has the oil psi, vacuum, water and volt meter. I will post some pics soon if you want to see this thing. It's not a jewel yet, just a real clean runner and kind of fun. I may also have some individual Monte SS cluster gauges to get rid of cheap.

Welcome. I like to read these kinds of posts. You have done a good job of dramatically improving your ride for cheap. One thing I believe the 83 MCSS only had a 3.42 as I believe it only had the 3 speed transmission. I may be wrong and I am sure someone here care verify it one way or another. I had a buddy a while back scored a complete 383 longblock from a local speed/machine shop for the price of the machine work & valvejob etc. It was $330 and had a forged bottom end. The story was that the original owner got sent to the pen so the shop sold it for his bill.

Hey, thanx for the reply! If a guy looks around and doesn't get in a hurry, there are deals to be made everywhere. The rearend in question is supposed to be an SS??? That's what the kid who sold it told me. His friends had an SS in rough shape and they pulled the diff and were going to use the car for a derby car...yeah!, that made me sick. They told him he could have it for scrap or whatever he wanted it for, so I found it on Craigslist. If you don't mind listening to me rattle for a moment or two, here are some of the deals I found for this Malibu project. The Autostick 1 shifter, Hurst quit making these in the early seventies, as far as I can come up with, and it was $160 shipped from Ohio. 2 New 40 series Flowmaters for $60, Centerline Conve Pros 15x8 & 15x7 with T/A's for $350. I am going to post a closeup of these wheels here in the near future and get some feedback from all you guys, cause these are not Convos'! All the Autometer gauges are new but I have $148 in all of 7 of them. I'll get some pics up in the next few days. Gotta eat some supper for now.

Welcome from Pueblo

Welcome from Brighton. I too have been building my GP on a budget....Probably why it's taken so long to get it done :? Oh well where you at?

Morning folks, probably be using you guys knowledge in the future. Trying to learn what other G parts will work for me. I have an 85 IROC in the driveway, damn rough, for parting or whatever. Wanted to use the steering box but was informed of the steering stops and turning radius. Now I guess an SS Monte box is the trick, just gotta look around.
Canon City is home by the way.
