Hi Everyone,

I now own an 87 Grand Prix Brougham, 305 V-8, with 63,000 original miles on it. I've done a little bit of work to it since I bought it such as repairing the A/C and swapping out some tires. I've also reinstalled the bolt that holds the dipstick tube in place. Is it common for these to fall out? Should I have loc tited it back in?

Also I have acquired a set of factory Rally Gauges from an '86 Grand Prix (also a V-8 car). I've done a little reading on here and it seems that all I need to do is run the negative wire from the tach to the distributor and change the sending units for the oil pressure and water temp and this thing will plug in and work? Is that correct?

If so where are these units located on the engine? And can I get them at a parts store or do I need to source them from a donor vehicle?

Last but not least. Is there any real performance gain on these small engines by installing the Monte Carlo SS dual exhaust? My tail pipe is falling off so I will need to do something soon.

Thanks!!!
Ron

first off welcome....

I am not sure on the gauges....someone else can chime in about that but the sending unit for the water is screwed in the head on the drivers side and the oil one is right by the dist you can go to the parts store and get them new they should ask you if you have gauges or idiot lights.... and as far as the exhaust goes yes it will help you out the better you can get air in and out of the engine the better it will do since a internal combustion engine is just a glorified air pump

i also have a 85 gp brougham with the 305.. edlebrock carb or holly...with intake...get a more powerful dist..(accell or summit) will do. true dual exhaust...shift kit in the trans..chnge the rear to a posi.... thats pretty much the cheap rooute for the 305..oh my fault headers cant forget those... an you'll notice a difference...trust me

You should have 3 termials (connections) on your tach.
One +, one is -, the third goes to your distributor marked "tach".(next to hot wire on cap)
Between the tach and distributor you also need a filter. (looks like a capacitor).
Hopes this helps.

Thanks for all the help guys! Looks like I'll go with the Monte Exhaust. I am not planning on modifying this car extensively just exhaust, wheels and gauges. Speaking of Gauges where is this filter located? I can grab it from the parts car I just need to know where to look.

Thanks again for all the help!

It's in the back bolted to the firewall it looks like a small battery like a "AA" just a little fatter and it has a wire coming off each end, just follow the wire coming off the distributor if the car has a tach.
