Spend a few days wandering the site since you're new to Gbodys. There is a ton of info and knowledge to absorb.
My '79 was much like yours when I got it. Very original with a 305 and TH200. Yours probably even has the same 2.29 gears, or something equally as lame.
Since you mentioned dual exhaust, check Rockauto for GN pieces. I got both over the axle pipes, muffler, and tailpipes for around $125. Then I did my own headpipes. Sounds great, in my opinion.
Unless your 305 is worn out, you might consider leaving it alone. For my money, regearing to 3.42s and swapping in a 200-4R made it feel like twice the power it had. Plus, since my cruise RPM stayed the same, I can still knock down better than 20mpg.

However you preceed, please start a build thread. We'd all love to follow along.

Did you also throw in a posi into your diff? I am running on an open diff right now and so I guess I'd have to get steeper gears and a posi. I will check out this website and I'm hoping shipping won't be too much. A set of roush axel back mufflers for my 15 gt cost me about 900$ cad with shipping. Good grief...

I did put in a used Auburn posi from a Camaro. Budget was tight when I did it. If i were doing it now I probably buy a new unit and upgrade to 28 spline axles at thr same time.
To me the main upside of the GN exhaust is that its 2-inlet and 2-outlet with a single muffler in the stock location behind the rearend. Probably not a real noticeable prrformance gain but was worth a full second in the quarter for me. Still slow😀.
It has a distinct muscle car rumble without any drone like a lot of the performance mufflers. Just personal preference. No need to sound fast it it's not.

I'm looking on rockauto and I'm not sure where I would find an exhaust kit. What parts would I need to install a dual on my car? I have no preference for x or h pipe but I don't want a y to à dual cat back.

Nice clean car! That interior is very likely factory original. GM did some...interesting...things back then. It's reminiscent of the Mohave or Tahoe package. I've also seen reference to an Aztec pattern but don't know what that looks like.

Welcome from Melville, Saskatchewan. I believe that is the rare Aztec interior. Price out a 2.25" custom dual dual system at your local muffler shop. If you keep your stock axles, get the Detroit Trutrac posi. I just upgraded to the Yukon spider gears with my 3.42 gears. The stock ones are soft and tend to explode. The 2004R with a 2000 or so stall lock up converter will really wake the car up with 3.42 gears and pull down great mileage. The dual exhaust helps as well. With stock height tires you need the black and green gears in the trans. Use the TCI lock up kit. In my 88 with a dual exhaust Olds 260, 2004R and 3.42 open I get very good town mileage and got 26 mpg imperial last highway trip on a windy fall day, shooting for 30 mpg. If you drive like a normal person 25 mpg imperial should be possible on the highway. The Hooker Aerochambers sounded amazing under my 88 but were on the louder side.

Muffler, both pipes going over the rearend into the muffler, both tailpipes. You'll have to have a muffler shop do the pipes from the manifolds back to the rearend.
