New member introductions

I agree with others that you have to build trust over time. The forum is only as good as what you put into it. Many are daily contributors. Quite a few post a few times a year as others mentioned when they need parts

I completely agree. It should be a requirement, prior to asking questions or asking for parts, to provide a quick introduction and some pictures of your G-Body. Or even just an intro haha its just polite to do so and it builds a small amount of trust..
Sometimes im curious if people just come on this site to scope out our cars and find out where we live...haha just being paraniod, but still in todays world...who knows?! haha

Could not agree more. In this day and age trust is not easy to come by with all the scammers lurking. I remember my first posting here someone a few hours from me was curious where I was located. That person I do not think posted again? Could have been totally innocent. I did not know anyone at that point and no one knew me. Still nothing wrong being cautious. I guess when I post future pictures of my car I need to have my rifle and gun collection on display! 🙂 lol or my pit bull breeding area.🙂

now that I have almost 1500 messages, and y'all trust me now.....

have you guys thought about what how you'll make ends meet after retirement, or an accident????

Darren,
Does this mean you're getting into the insurance business? It's very lucrative from what I understand. 😉

Hmmm ! I thought the idea behind this forum was to find information, learn and maybe find something in common with others.
I do think for people that plan on making money by selling parts that they should have to have a paid membership. Sorry but that's just a security point !
I myself enjoy reading the post, maybe pick up a trick here or there. Always learning !
If people don't feel comfortable giving people a Name or address , simple don't do it ! Personally l'd never ask, it would have to be offered to me when the other person felt comfortable. Sounds Simple !
Society has changed over the years and not for the good !!!!

Bob,
I'm not implying that people should disclose their names or addresses...although a first name would be nice. I like referring to a person by their first name, not by their screen name.
I realize there's a lot of paranoia in this day and age, but for the most part we'd like to maintain a nice, friendly, close community. Some of us have been members of this forum for awhile now. We've had the occasional wise-*ss that has trouble interacting with other members...and you get the people that enjoy sharing information, as it should be.
I agree that society has changed. and not always for the better.
Hopefully we can all enjoy our hobby and be civil to one another.

Longroof79 l agree with your last post, but everyone has different comfort zones. At the same time l won't remember anyone's real name unless l met them in person buts just me !
And I'm one of those who won't necessarily remember a name even after the 1st, 2nd, or 5th meeting... just happens that way...

I will say that when I find an interesting item I look at someone's posts and content... if they haven't participated elsewhere, or are only looking to trade here, I usually ignore it no matter how interested I'd otherwise be.

As far as input, I myself kinda ebb and flow. Sometimes I'll make a pile of posts in a day, sometimes I go a couple days or even a week or more without being around too much - depends on what else is going on keeping me distracted and away, and sometimes these days it can be lots.

I like to think with places like this you get out what you put in, as far as effort goes. People who contribute more in activity usually get rewarded in ways the shadow members dont, whether it's free offers to come by and help on a project or even a surprise pay-it-forward offer of a free part/parts when they posted a wanted ad. I know ive sent stuff out like that before...

Much of it as others have mentioned is comfort level. Young people today are growing up always connected and using my 20 something Relatives as examples, have no fear putting their whole life online. You know what they are doing, where they go, how they feel all the time. Privacy to them means something different then what I perceive it as being.

When you think about it, before the Internet became what it is, the only time your name was made public was when you were born, when you got married, when you had a phone, when you died. You could go through an entire life that no one knew about unless they were friends or relatives. That was the world I grew up in as a kid in the late 60's and 70's. You went on vacation for 2 weeks and you were gone! No one heard from you until you got back. Total disconnect. Not many do this anymore.

That is the beauty of a forum like this is the span of ages from 18-80 for example. Are commonality is the enjoyment of a certain type of car. We just need to remember that beyond the cars our upbringing could be vastly different. Our generation looking at the world so differently then another. Those who have dealt with identy theft, been robbed, been ripped off, will certainly be more protective then having to go through what hell they dealt with before.

Maybe its just me,but I see forums as communities. When choosing one,you want to be around like minded people. Some have super talent that inspires us all, some are just collectors, whether it be knowledge or junk. Some novice, some noob but we are all connected because of our passion for these G-Body toys. We are not going to like everyone, thats a given, but thats life. In any community of people there are those who stand out, speak more, get more involved. Its the same here. There will always be a core group of people who do the majority of work, that will be enjoyed by many. Just my two cents...
