Nice 1986 low mileage 442

Trader history (0)

Looks more like 114,993 miles on it instead. When car dealers show a car claiming low mileage, I'm always a bit cautious. But this one has a LOT of flaws. This may seem a bit harsh review, but lemme break this car down...

Car built in April, 1986. Last 6 of the VIN is 384355. However, it still sports the 198 compressor and beaded air cleaner lid. Hmm. Again, not sure when the 86 cars went with the 622 compressor and flat lid, but at some point, they did. The A/C hose assembly is the "newer" style.

With that out of the way, there's SO much unlove for it to have 14 on the clock. Something doesn't seem right. Did they just park it outside? From the stickers on the windshield, it spent at least 11 years in West Virginia. At the 10 second mark you can see silver paint overspray on the front frame rail, and again a good shot of it on the driver side at 1:04. Lots of it. At 33-35 seconds it seems like I noticed the rear of the short U-bend A.I.R. tube to have hose clamp instead of crimp clamp. It's missing on the driver side, but I've seen that before where they just didn't install one. The sponge rubber on the A/C hose is in ratty condition along with the hood liner. Maybe a rat did eat on them. Wiper blades are aftermarket, but to be expected as other rubber bits are deteriorating. The upper radiator hose at the rad connection has a worm clamp on it, but they came with double wire clamps at the radiator location, and this one still has a double wire at the T-stat.

I also spied, while he was filming the wheel wells, the stripes are aftermarket. They don't wrap" into the wheel well like GM ones and they also don't wrap around the door edges. Obviously the car was repainted at some point. Seemed to do a good job, but still, it's not original paint. (EDIT: I went back and turned the sound on and he did admit to a repaint. So there's that.) Lessee...rear bumper chrome trim has been pulled off, as remnants of the double sticky tape are still there, and never got replaced. The taillights rockets are fugged up/missing. Slight faux pas in the license plate pull handle was put back in upside down. The emblem/decal are too low on the trunklid, but it was repainted, so they just approximated, I guess. He mentions the original mufflers leaked due to condensation build up/rust through. Hmmm. How does he know? Anyway, I'll assume the mufflers have been replaced as the tailpipes for sure have been. 100% baloney cut instead of about 90% told me right away they weren't GM tailpipes. And I'm just going to assume they bought the 86 442 front end kit from Gbodyparts.com or some place. The grilles look new, but they don't appear to be GM ones.

I also noticed on the SPID it has B84 body side molding. In 1986, they would match the upper body color, which is medium gray metallic, thus color code 84Q (gray) for the body side molding. Obviously it's missing. No surprise since the stuff is unobtanium, but still.

The console is getting ratty. The shift plate looks like a well worn used one, more than 15K miles. The lighter knob isn't the right one. The steering wheel...just no. There's 4 lbs of smudging/dirt around the driver power window switches. Floor mats are aftermarket. I surely understand a bit of wear here and there, and overall the car isn't terrible. It needs a TON of TLC to be worth what they're asking, though. Maybe not even then. Here's a pic of the console area:

The outside door belt seals are shot, with pieces missing. Hood ornament missing the back jewels, half-worn out dash chrome, especially around the headlamp area. The console lid has damage and has been repainted (see it at 6:19 along with what appears to be a small tear? in the driver side seat, lower back area). Alternator appears to have a "rebuilt by" sticker on it and it definitely isn't original as the front pulley is black and more flat faced. Not sure as the a-hole taking video wouldn't slow down. The engine has some sort of miss in it as the engine shakes a lot during idle and seems to be there during acceleration when he goes on a drive. There are two hose clamps on the A.I.R. tubing at the switching valve on the passenger valve cover. So that explains the missing one, so those hoses were taken off for some reason. The bypass hose is a red heater hose piece which means likely the water pump may have been replaced, or T-stat was, or something. Wrong oil pressure sender unit. Looks aftermarket.

Oh, and the A.I.R. pump belt is removed. Why? Also, noticed on the test drive, the gages go wonky. The tach plug needs fixing or replacing as the tach reads high, and the oil pressure pegs out high, and the gas gage needle flutters periodically. So some dash work is in a new owner's future there fixing those gages.

The B pillar trim is beat to crap by sand or small rocks. The weatherstripping is in absolutely horrible shape. Under both doors the seam seals are splitting (photo below of pass door). Looks like rust is starting in on that area. The door jamb decals are weather worn, so it must sit outside all the time. To be fair, those door jamb decals can fade even in a garage if they ever start to separate.

Overall, this car isn't in great shape. Would I own it? Yes. Would I pay what they're asking? No way. I'm not a hater, but this looks like a poorly kept 15K mile car. To replace all the stuff this car needs to be worthy of 15K miles, it will be expensive. Car is in Conway, SC, over by Myrtle Beach. If I lived a little closer, I'd go look it over myself. But it's not worth the drive for me where I'm at for what's "wrong" with it. The website shows the "retail" price is $38 and change. You can save and get it for $35,220. WTF?

69hurstolds : Wow, if I ever think of buying another GBody before I die, I'm definitely hiring you and will fly you out to inspect it first!! :notworthy:

I quick watched the video quick at 2x speed and it looked "ok" from what I saw, and now that I've taken a closer look at all the still pics from the web site you posted, hard to disagree with any of your points. I have no personal interest in the sale, or anything about it and now that I know what they're asking I probably wouldn't have shared it.

The mileage concern is definitely an issue, I couldn't agree more that it's highly suspect to have all that "wear and tear" and obvious parts replaced for a car with only 14K, despite the almost 40 yrs of age. The fact that the TACH and OIL gauges are acting up makes me think even more that maybe the ODO was messed with by someone, so unless there's state DMV proof of the mileage over the lifetime of ownership I'd be shocked if it was accurate...maybe not 114K, but hard to believe 14K. Not making any accusations, it's just my opinion on that.

I think you mentioned it...but the Wiper/Cruise stalk being so worn, and the steering wheel leather so delaminated also highly suspect. The headlight rocker switch lettering too. My h/l switch being only a year newer, with about 50K original miles isn't that worn out.

Lastly, no underbody, chassis, engine, exhaust and suspension pics are also suspect which are hard to hide road driven miles...imho.

I think they're just trying to focus on the fresh paint work, and the overall 10ft away looks; which is pretty good...but the price doesn't work for me either.

I'd say $20K - $25K might be in the offing if I was interested since it's still in better condition than many others I've seen, but I would only be interested in a G80 equipped car, but that's just me.

All in all, like you said it's surely a clean overall vehicle and with some TLC would make it even nicer!!
