I Have a 2002 Buick Century and i was on my way to class today and it started making a wierd knocking sound what could be the cause of this???? and what are some fixes????

Where was the sound coming from?
Did it get louder/quieter with RPM changes or did it stay the same?
Did it pick up speed with RPM increase?
Is it a solid knock or more of a rattle?
Does it happen any time the engine is running or only while the car is in motion?

when the RPMs went up the ticking went up and when the RPMs went down the ticking went down but anyways its a solid knocking/ticking sound according to a friend he said it sounded like the push rod pushed up through the rocker arm but pulled the valve cover and that wasn't the case anythings that would sound similar????

It was the same sound no matter what the RPMs and also it is coming from the engine bay.

if it's a ticking noise,it is most commonly a lifter. not a big deal if relatively quiet. check your oil if its dirty CHANGE IT. if its low FILL IT UP. sorry for the yelling but its amazing what people wil do/not do. a knocking noise is bad. you should be able to pull the serpentine belt pretty easily--if the noise goes away with no belt, try and move the harmonic balancer, sometimes the rubber portion separates from the center. next try spinning and moving all of your pulleys by hand. thewater pump and alternators are notorious for making weird noises. if the knocking is internal and you have good clean full oil--get a new car. is it a v6 or a 4cyl. if its a 6, there are 2 rocker covers and sometimes when people do the intake gaskets they overtighten the rocker bolts. the bolt eventually strips and the rocker comes loose. first it knocks, the it breaks and kiss the engine good-bye.

as towards the oil it is full (its dark as hell though) and the intakes we havn't touched and i think in the morning i'll try the others
