Oil puddle on top of engine after a drive ???

well personally i'm not a fan of the 73 to 80 cutlass's... so honestly... i'd do the same.... but that's just a personal preference... depending on the condition of the body, it might not be worth messing with anyways.... 🙁

The car is is good shape, (no dents or rust except for rear frame members) it is just ugly as sin because it needs a new paint job and an interior refresh. The engine problems are the biggest issue. If I can put in some new gaskets and make it run reliably then I will be very happy with it. Compression is on the low side, around 100-110 per cylinder (dry) but shows no indication of any valve problems. So, I think it that even that it is old, it still has some life in it. I have no idea how many miles it has on it. It says around 1900 on the speedometer its at least been around the block a time or two.

I agree that these 73-80 models are a bit "ugly" but I think that is part of their charm. Give them 10 years and they will be more attractive. They always are after they become 40 yrs old since people look at them as the cars that their mom and dads used to drive them around in when they were kids. And since mine is a wagon I think that adds to it. It will never be worth any money but it should be a "cool" car at least.

don't do anything yet pull the intake bolt where the leak is and put some rtv on it and put it back in gm motors are known for this, check the oil for signs of water in the oil it will look like chocolate milk the drop in the overflow could be the system equalizing. don't always jump to the worst case scenario remember the K.I.S.S method (keep it simple stupid)

If you can, try to post a pic up of the puddle. You can also try getting a dye kit and put that in the oil to try to find the leak. I think they sell them at auto parts stores. I don't think there is many places the oil could be coming from besides the oil pressure sensor and the oil fill tube.

Charlie is right!

If the oil is around a bolt or bolts, just put some sealant on the threads. I have been there and done that many times 8)

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to clean up the years of sludge around the puddle and try it again. I put some more antifreeze in it and will give it another drive and see what happens. I recently drained and replaced the coolant so maybe there were some air pockets or something. I have had to add coolant a few times since I changed it so I am not sure if it has leveled out or not. I didn't drive the car much before that so I can't tell if the problem existed before.

I will try to get to it this weekend and see what happens.

To the person asking about my valve covers, they are leaking like everything else. But the puddle is up on top of the engine so it can't be from those.
