And you also need the bearing retainer on the front of the transmission to locate into the hole in the bellhousing. So you wouldn't want to space it too far.
Hello all, bill is right, I just came across this post. I have to put this out there. There are late and even smog 307s with the pilot hole drilled in the crankshaft. In 2010 i went by all who said there wasn't a hole drilled, bc I originally wanted to put my T-5 behind my 307 out of a '90 Sedan De Ville. I never questioned it. So i bought my rebuilt '73 350 sbo. In April, I switched the motors and saw the SMOG 307 had a pilot hole!!!
That crank hole was identical to my '73 350. I was upset with myself for a moment. Lesson learned.
IT'S A FACT GUYS!! So they are out there. Check your engine before spending your cash.
