Olds 350 question

the cost between chevy and olds isnt much considering you are already spending 2 to 3 thousand on a good performance engine, a few hundread dollars is well worth it when all the olds guys get togeather and see you have chosen the oldsmobile way, everybody puts chevy in an olds, like putting a dodge in a chevy, who would ever do that, anyway olds is tourque, where u gonna be driven, the street or nascar, i would assume street, wouldnt be afraid to race any chevey with my olds.

I say to each their own, but you can't compare it to putting a dodge in a chevy. Remeber GM put chevy motors in the olds too. Either motor can make great torque for the street.

Also, you have any recomendations on cams that would fit what I'm looking for above and operated around say 1,500 to 6,500 range (or close). I wish I could find more videos online of SBO's with cams.

You cant just pick any cam and expect it to work good. You need to know what compression ratio you want, what gear ratio you want to use, what intake manifold, what cylinder heads you are going to use. I would suggest going to a good machine shop that knows about performance engines and tell them what you want with the car/engine, and what your budget is. They should be able to help you select all of the parts you need to make everything work well together.

I forgot to add, if you do decide to go with Olds you dont want to buy stuff from Mondello. They are known to have outrageous prices and horrible customer service.

for starters tell your friend hes an F'in moron.... You drive an Olds.. try to keep it Olds powered, unless your going circle track with it and plan on blowing the engine up or revvin it to the moon....

Dick Miller is a good guy to deal with Olds.. Mondello is a household name.. while Mr. Mondello himself was God when it came to olds' and he used to be the one to talk to.. his company is now run by a pos derelict...

Oldsmobiles are low RPM torque motors...

Really?

Stroke of a 350 Chevy - 3.48"

Stroke of a 350 Olds - 3.385"

Sounds like an unfounded stereotype to me.

The meaning is Olds engines, just like Pontiacs and Buicks as well, make lots of torque down low in the RPM range. So it's not a stereotype, it's really true. And because of this, most aren't concerned about revving these engines past 5000 or above, especially in a street app. That's why most cams / induction for these engines are in the 1200 - 4500 range, with a few in the 5500 ~ 6500 range but these are way radical. Hell, your stock ignition isn't going to perform great at that upper level anyway (thinking stock points & bone stock HEIs). Add in some parts that weren't designed to take that abuse...

Also, just because an engine has a short stroke doesn't mean it's automatically going to rev high or make lots of power up there. It's more in the intake side (heads, cam, fuel delivery). The shorter stroke (theorectically) allows the engine to spin up the RPM range faster than a long-stroke engine, but again, it's going to depend on the induction side for the torque and hp range / values.

Go to realoldspower.com and look up there vendors. They are all good and know there Olds. Mondildo is worthless..... AS for a cam depending what you want to do with it. You want to take into consideration of the heads and valves. Olds heads do not have valves like Chevies, so you need to have a cam with more duration on the exhaust side to make up for it, they dont flow as well. For instance in my engine I have a mild cam, .505/.505 lift and duration @.50 228/236 with a 108 centerline. The 108 centerline helps me bleed off my compression (10.5 to 1). As for the power of a 350, I had a 76 Cutlass with a 350 and 2.73 gears and my buddy had a 71 Chevelle with a 350 and 3.08 gears, of course my car was way heavier. On 100's of drag racing type starts I always beat him. He would get me off the line but never beat me or out run me. Olds have the biggest bores and the longest strokes which equals torque, torgue moves you! Good luck

Olds 307, 350 and 403 are very good motors even with lousy gearing. My truck had a sbc 350 with 2.76 gears, a dog. Swapped in a high mile 307 vin Y, ran way stronger. The 350 Olds that replaced it even better.
