right now i have them in like in the first two pics at the top of the page, so i should pull the motor back out and flip the driver side frame mount up side down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like fe3x pointed out, the longer part of the mount should be pointed up on both sides. If i'm not mistaken, the driver's side mount should have an "L" stamped on it.

If you mount them like your first pic, the engine can be muscled onto the mount, but then the engine will sit crooked. When its right, the engine will go in easily.

you are so right i did have to muscle it on the frame mounts, i have not hooked up the trans yet because i wanna know should i pull the motor out and flip the driver side frame mount.

This may be why my manifold on the passenger side is hitting the firewall...lol. I used the center mount position on the engine and put the mounts all the way back on the frame, towards the firewall. When installing the trans, the mount hole was off center about an inch but I was still able to mount it to the crossmember. Did any guys with SBO 350's in your cutlass' use the front mounting positions on the engines with the frame mounts on the front of the frame? My logic for this was because the A body cars had the mounts on the center of the engines, so I set it up that way and others have told me that the frame mounts always went as far back as possible. idk...

wow so i wanna just say the mounts in the first pics are WRONG, i guess monday i will pull the motor out and flip the driver side mount around. thanks for all the input keep the info going for guys who need it GBODY4LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My mechanic buddy told me the best solution in a case like my swap is to mount the trans to the crossmember, put the mounts on the engine, install the frame mounts to the motor mounts, lower the engine down, level it...and then weld the frame mounts in their positions and be done with it....maybe I should have followed his advice!
Heres some pics of a frame...I used these as reference....

Edited due to my own confusion...lol.

I just went down to the garage and looked at my mounts again. If you look at the pictures above, you will see that this particular frame mount cannot be mounted in any other place except in the back of the frame member. In order for the engine to be as low as possible in the frame, the frame mounts should be mounted with the wider part at the top. why that first pic you posted shows them flipped is beyond me.... the only reason I can think of is to allow for torque of the engine or maybe to provide added clearance, but my engine fit fine and the manifold issue maybe due to the fact that the factory probably used different frame mounts for the diesel 350's in these cars to allow for manifold clearance because the 307 manifold is not shaped the same as a 350 (gas or diesel). Hope this info helps...and didnt make it more confusing....lol

Never ever weld your frame pads to the frame! It's not that hard to just bolt them in place.

Although I did weld all of the non-essential engine mount holes in my frame so that I can say this car is an OLDS ONLY chassis. 😛

true....but some swaps require frame pads to be mounted where there are no holes available or custom made pads and once the engine is in, theres not much chance of removing them and rebolting them into place... of course you can always drill out some new holes, but that would require removing the engine again......just my 2cents...lol

When I swapped in my 301, I used a bare shortblock and an empty trans case to locate the mounts. Then I tack welded them in place as well as spray painted the outlines. The bare block allowed lots of room for this. Then I removed the block/trans and drilled new holes to bolt the mounts in. Worked great.
