When I swapped in my 301, I used a bare shortblock and an empty trans case to locate the mounts. Then I tack welded them in place as well as spray painted the outlines. The bare block allowed lots of room for this. Then I removed the block/trans and drilled new holes to bolt the mounts in. Worked great.
thats the right way to do it Bonne....I didnt have the bare block and wasnt that smart anyway...lol!

These cars had Buick v6's, olds 307's, sbc's, and pontiac 301's. The holes for the mounts are there. Welding the mounts in these cars should never be needed unless you are installing a ford or chrysler engine.

Once worked on a car where the owner complained the headers wouldn't fit, among other problems. I took the car, cut off the mounts where he welded them on, installed the proper mounts in the proper holes, and bingo, no more problems, everything fit perfectly. Something to think about 8)

You would think all the holes for all the motors offered would be there, but my 81' Malibu didn't have them for Pontiac, nor did my 83' Bonneville, but to be fair there was no Pontiac available in 83'. I will say though that the Bonneville had all the room in the world for the Pontiac manual trans bellhousing and linkage, while the Malibu required much pounding of the floor to fit the Pontiac setup.
