On the 'mildly' Cheap SS Monte Carlo chasing a 9.0___

Oh that hotside doesn't even look that bad 😛

I need to get to work!

Will I get this to fit?

I measured and the driver side is going to be close. This the last 8.50 cert piece that I need (I think lol).

I've been busy and not posting pics, Some pic heavy posts to come of my junkyard, cob'd up stuff before long.

Needed an 1.5” or so additional clearance.

The flexplate shield is fitting with some room to spare. Need longer mounting bolts, and I’m sure this will make trans install AWFUL, but …… you gotta do what ya gotta do - needed to cert 9.99 and below.

I appreciate this post. Doesn't look as bad as I thought it was going to be.

I expected it to not fit. With the carpet on the floor I can’t see where I pushed it in. I gave an extra 3/4” of clearance as well.

For reference I have the truck accessory power steering pulley with 1/4” of clearance to the steer gear.

Mind filling us ignorant folks in?

Is this another way to dodge SFI Flywheel or SFI rated bellhousing requirements for sub 9.00 cars?

Wouldn't it just be easier to reinforce the floor?

This seems like such a convoluted option for such limited protection.

Yeah, probably, but
NHRA/SFI Safety spec =/= logic
or
NHRA/SFI Safety Sec =/= safety

From what I can tell (I had to look this up because I was not aware) if you go faster than 10's NHRA makes you either run an aftermarket case (like a Reid powerglide), bellhousing (JW ultrabell), or one of these shields.

I've never been to a track that gives 2 craps. BUT HotRod does with drag week so gotta play the game I guess.

Probably because once years ago someone (judging by the release date on the SFI spec being 1989) got their foot cut off when a flywheel blew up and went through the case on a trans. Same with SFI balancers, I trust an OEM GM developed balancer over an oversees sourced aftermarket one that is SFI certified, but anyways.

What seems really counter intuitive, if you need a 6.1 spec bellhousing, do you also need a 30.1 spec shield? Does a 6.1 spec bell only apply to stick cars?

Why does a steel part like a shield expire after 5 years?

NHRA/SFI has terrible clarity on safety requirements.

NHRA requires for 9.99 and faster an SFI rated flex plate, flex plate shield and transmission scatter shield or blanket. I have the correct flex plate and transmission blanket but no flex plate scatter shield until now. It is legal to have an SFI rated case such as a Reid case, but those things are $2K + for a 4L80 just for the transmission case without any trans parts installed. I, of course, have gone the cheaper route that will allow the car to tech to 9.99 and faster

Yes, and I looked into it. I could've purchased a Kevlar blanket and lined the floor with it, but it doesn't meet The No Hotrods Allowed (Donovan's acronym) rule requirements.

I believe that most of these parts are safety precautions for old school stuff, but have carried over. I've never heard of a stock 4l80 flex plate causing an issue, let alone the beefy *ss flex plate that I have already. TH350, 200-4R, 700-R4 case's are not strong. But ........ their rules that I have to follow I guess.

Regarding who gives two sh*ts, you're correct Jake. Some tracks are worse than others about enforcing silly rules. I've been warned or tossed from every track I've had the car at and I've never ran in anything other than drag and drive stuff or TnT. I had a tech guy give me crap over not having two throttle return springs - I was shaking my head over that and I've had to prove that my solid state master disconnect works about 5 times - the old school guys don't seem to appreciate it lol.

I was not happy when I got chucked at Atco, but that's how it goes. I had factory belts at over 135 was the no no there.
