Hi there, I was wondering what you would think about my idea for a paint job. I have an 82 Cutlass, and I was thinking about black/gold, sort of my take on the 79-80 Hurst/Olds. Following the lines of the 82, I was thinking black on top, with gold down the sides, and more black on the bottom, with the ugly chrome trim removed. It's kind of hard to explain, but if you look at the 83 Hurst/Olds, try to imagine gold in the space between the red stripes, minus the red stripes of course. I'm just wondering what everybody thinks. Also I'd like some gold Hurst Dazzler 15" wheels as well.

I would wait til the car is all the way stripped down and you're in prep mode / bodywork stage to even consider buying those expensive rims but black sounds like a good idea. If the car does rust out 5-6 years down the line it will not look nearly as terrible rusting through to black paint as rust does look coming through on a bright flashy color. Brown, Red, Burgundy, and Tropicana Orange are examples of some other colors that are 'going out of style' right now therefore somewhat cheap and won't look bad on a car that is starting to rust out / lives outside and is continuing to oxidize. Just be honest with yourself and don't get carried away on paint / bodywork spending. No matter what you do or how you paint the car there's no that particular Cutlass could survive another 10 years outside of a garage so remember that when pricing your paint. This is the midwest and rust is always a factor. Consider aluminum rims too which are becoming popular over here and would most likely outlive that Cutlass if it continues to live outside during harsh winters.
