Optispark test?

what I found out isn't helpful...they first check it with the oscilloscope and then depending on what they find they either replace the unit or check the wiring to the distributor......one other "mechanic" told me if they come in with a problem he just changes everything... :blam:

nothing like carpet bombing the problem instead of taking the time to diag. properly

i owned camaro for 3 years before i swapped for the cutty... best bet is to get the vented opti.. that'll help and also sealing it better but to help you with any an everything this is the site to go to an as far as F bodies of any kind this is best site http://www.mifbody.com/vbulletin/

I thought I found every F-body site, that one I will peruse also, thank's. The 95' was the first year of the vent, but so many hands have been into this car I need to start from scratch and that means taking a day just to tear it down enough to check for loose connections, etc. Looks like I will be getting a new distributor no matter what just to get a new optical sensor. The Delphi seems reasonable at around $250, same quality as AC Delco, yes? I am afraid to jump on one of the $150 "lifetime warranty" units having heard so much bad about those too. The real b*tch about this is it's my Daughter's car and she is famous for smashing them right after money has been thrown at them. :blam: So you can see how I am reluctant to squander major coin on this otherwise I would go for the $500 Accuspark or the Northstar style upgrade.

the delphi (delco) is the GM brand I thought, at least that's the one the garage I know of just used to replace one. If you check I think that delphi must be a rebuild at that price and is what my friend used...except it cost him about $150 more up here...

I thought Delphi was the OEM supplier for GM? The AC Delco ads say that "bad cores are discarded" which I would take to mean rebuilt. I read that GM is not producing them at all anymore so aside from an aftermarket brand I think they will all be rebuilts now. The AIP unit has a "lifetime warranty" but I read that some shops have had 4 replacements and that is a LOT of work to be doing. The Chandler Motorsports unit seems good but again without believable feedback, who knows?

I never heard of them but if that's the one on Ebay they sure sell alot of different components and have a 99.6 rating so they must be doing something right. They do have a few good comments on the optispark unit but that just could be some of their friends...

True. Could be. But they are suppossedly aiming to be a liscenced parts vendor to GM so I don't think they would screw around.

OK, I got the Delphi unit today. Amazon had 1 left at under $300. The first thing I did was open it and locktighted the rotor screws so they won't come loose. Sure enough they were barely finger tight even though there was some sort of yellow crud on the threads I guess was supposed to be threadlocker. Pathetic. Luckilly the LT1 forums addressed this at length. Also there were lots of greasy fingerprints inside, good quality control, eh? Now all I need to do is file for an appointment with my kid to have the car stand still long enough to service it.

what, he'll be back when it runs out of gas right?
